Problem with Aweber's new html broadcast editor

Is anyone else having problems with prepared text not displaying properly in Aweber's HTML or Drag & Drop email editor?

I've been using the old editor until last Saturday when it suddenly disappeared. I pasted my prepared text from notepad as usual into the HTML editor but when I did the formatting was not retained. All the words ran together. I also tried the Drag & drop editor but the same thing happened. I've tried pasting from Word using the button at the top of the screen but it is just the same.

I've contacted Aweber about it but have been told that the paste from text or word buttons should work but they don't. They say they developed the system in response to feedback from marketers but as far as I am concerend it's worse if you can't just copy and paste into the editor.

I guess that there is a way of preparing the text in an HTML editor before hand and then pasting the HTML source code into the HTML source view in Aweber.

Anyone?

As I have said when I paste it into the editor using either the button at the top for text or Word the lines all run together with no breaks. My message does not retain the same format as I have written it out in notepad. I have to then go through it and space it all out again. It's a pain I can do without!

You're not alone in having issues with the new "improved" design.

Contact their support who will then pass your comments on to the programmers and may (or may not) have a workaround.

I've been having a conversation back and forth with support but am getting nowhere. They don't know why I'm getting the problem I am. They say it should work. I've sent screen shots of what's happening.

That's why I'm now asking here.

Are you having problems with it?

        Various issues.

I've been with Aweber for a very long time and was using the legacy editor because it worked well and I didn't want to learn a new interface just because some bright spark thought I should.

        On the new one:
        • Menu options disappear so the site navigation vanishes
        • Most of the options aren't obvious and are spread over various screens - it's easy enough nowadays to program this so that it could be all the same underlying code and have a regular and an advanced option where advanced is all on one screen (putting my techie hat on and viewing source, I'm pretty certain the underlying code is all on one page anyway or is close to that)
        • Copy and paste between HTML and plain text is glitchy, adding extra line breaks. That kind of schoolboy coding error goes back to last century.
        • Copying a broadcast doesn't copy the lists it was sent to (Tom Kulzer says this will be fixed today)
        • Unscheduling a broadcast and then rescheduling it forgets all the lists so you have to select them all again
        • Lists are selected inside a scrolling window so instead of seeing all lists you just see roughly 8 at a time. Which means it's super-easy to get the wrong ones - I accidentally included my JV partners in an email yesterday so had to send them an apology (that got several replies along the lines of "I know what you're going through, it's broken")
        • For me, the default time zone selection is Australia - it used to be EST and apparently should now default to my local time zone which is UK time. Support say they are looking at this but have been unable to recreate it (hmm, bug testers live all over the world for precisely that reason - I know someone locally who outsources some of their bug testing for precisely that reason)
It would be very simple to roll back the "upgrade" until everything has been properly tested but that doesn't seem to be on the radar as an option.

It's exceptionally time consuming to move from an autoresponder company - my lists tie in with Warrior Plus, I've got opt-in forms all over the place, that kind of thing - so my preference is that they get this fixed.

        Fingers crossed...

Trevor, I've experienced ALL of the problems you mentioned. Since I actually sent out a broadcast this evening. And that turned into a disaster.

I also posted on their blog a simple question.

"Can you just simply roll back to how Aweber was a week ago?"

We'll see if they even approve my post. I made another one as well which linked to this WF post as well.

Saw you on their forum also Trevor.

Yup - it's a trainwreck - I'm inadvertently including lists I don't normally mail to and getting unsubscribes and spam complaints.

Support claimed it was impossible to roll back to the previous version but having developed websites I'd be shocked if there were no backups.

Tom Kulzer is very aware of the issues and I'm sure he's on the case as ultimately it's his income that would be affected if people leave as a result of this.

Yes I'm also having similar problems.

Many problems since they've dumped the old editor. I've been in contact with 3 different support people in Aweber. One of them did not know of the problem but the other 2 were sort of aware.

It's not just one problem but many problems with the "new and improved" ha ha... HTML Editor.

      1. When you paste in everything becomes one long paragraph.

      2. You can avoid that problem by first pasting your document into http://www.writeurl.com/. Then copy from there and paste into the HTML editor. I was given this tip by one of their tech support people. So at least some of them are aware of the problem.

It will be properly formatted in the HTML but then you'll have all sorts of extra spaces (2 extra lines) between paragraphs in the plain text version. So you have to go in and manually remove all of the spaces.

What have we gone back to the stone ages with Aweber?

      3. You cannot shorten your lines of paragraphs anymore.

Remember when they had a tool to wrap the lines to say 65 characters per line or so? Well even if you import it with the line breaks it does not preserve them. Therefore I cannot edit my emails to look the way I want them to.

They're just these really long paragraphs that are harder to read. That's a major sucking point as far as I'm concerned.

      4. Whenever I send a test email I have to always re-enter my email and name. It does not save the settings at all. In the past you enter those settings once and you never have to enter them again unless you clear your cookies. Sometimes I send many test messages per broadcast. To have to constantly enter that info is ridiculous.

      5. I just sent out a broadcast for the first time in over a week (because of these issues - yes I have been working with an alternative to Aweber as a result) and to my surprise it only went out to one email list instead of the 26 emails lists I had checked off and 2 email lists that should not have been emailed.

Instead it just sent out to the main list and did not suppress the other lists. That was another major problem.

It's likely I just don't know how to use the new broadcast tool but those lists were initially checked off but their new DRAFTS page setup seemed not to have them there afterwords.

I can't freakin believe they've removed the old email editor. This is an epic fail.

I also know another email marketer who's business is teaching people email marketing who's really pissed at this and has been using Aweber longer than me. I've been using them for 9 + years.

He's already signed up for two different competitors of Aweber because this change totally handicapped how he does his email business.

Please Aweber realize that some of your customers are having serious issues with the new email editor and we want to old one back pronto. We cannot continue to use Aweber until these problems are fixed.

      This is a SERIOUS ISSUE!!!

Why should we have to waste time formatting this stuff manually that used to be done instantly before?

And why should I even be forced to learn anything new? Your old editor was the best for me and I don't want to keep on having to learn new stuff.

But even worse is losing functionality I had before.

I think the issue is that this is not happening with all Aweber accounts and so they don't think it's that serious. But for us with the older accounts it just doesn't work and the old editor needs to be brought back immediately.

And I suggest that editor should be kept for at least another 10 years. I have absolutely zero use for the other editors.

      That's my take on it.

Looks like a lot of Aweber customers are seriously ticked off at the new Drafts Folder and the removal of the old email editor.

See the comments on this post:

        https://blog.aweber.com/new-features...il-content.htm

Turns out we are not the only ones who's had issues with the new Drafts Folder. They have 40 comments in this blog and the first 20 or so that I've read so far are not happy with the changes.

Really this is the worst "upgrade" they have made in 9 years.

Tom Kulzer and Aweber are well aware of this problem. They're probably not trying to revert back to the previous ways of doing things because of the expense of what they just programmed.

But in so many ways this new system truly sucks.

The person I have been dealing with in support has finally admitted that it's not just me and that they do have a problem. She said that their developers are looking into the problem.

I did have the bright idea of changing browsers and found that it was marginally better copying and pasting from notepad using the paste as text button. The lines did not run together but it did not retain the paragraphs.

Hope they get it sorted soon. It's such a pain.

They did not approve my first post at the Aweber forum relative to this discussion. So I'll post it here to show what they seem to be censoring.

            Post URL:

            https://blog.aweber.com/new-features...comment-325138

Reason I say that is because they let my second "much shorter" post go through. I suppose they just don't want their members to see even more people who are unhappy with the changes implemented last week.

            Here's what I posted:

            ======
OK, I figured I'll chime in as well.

Never in my 9+ years of using Aweber have I seen such an epic fail before. Overall I have really liked Aweber and your great telephone support.

Please bring back the old system you had working perfectly well a week ago.

I know you guys are planning on new upgrades and segmentation features. And maybe that is why you are reluctant to roll back. Because this is all a part of it. And I think it's great you tried to make the system more user friendly. Unfortunately it did not work out that way.

Unfortunately Aweber is virtually unusable now. I've posted my 5 specific issues on this thread in the Warrior Forum.

            http://www.warriorforum.com/email-ma...st-editor.html

What about being able to make shorter paragraphs of say 60 or 65 characters? That very useful feature from the old plain text editor is gone. I can't even paste in a document that has the text wrapped to 60 characters because your editor does not recognize it.

And now you can't even do a spam check?

This new Drafts stuff was obviously rushed out way too soon and it's forcing many Aweber customers to look for other ESP solutions.

I've been told that you can load the old editor when you are logged into your account and in broadcast mode by adding "/add" to the URL in your browser. It will look like this:

              aweber . com/users/broadcasts/add

              Seems to work too!

I have discovered that the paste as text works better for me in Chrome than in Firefox. It does not retain the spaces between paragraphs but the lines stay as I formatted them.

Yes I wish for the same. The return of the old system.

But now I'm going to try and crank out an email with the old editor. Unfortunately I'm probably going to have to choose all of the email lists I want to mail to though. Normally they'd be preselected.

I just tried using the old editor. Seemed to work fine until I pressed "Save Message" button. Then nothing happens.

So you can't actually send a broadcast with the old message editor anyway. At least not on my end.

    exactly Rajhu...

My emails are very simple....I don't have a complex setup....copy and paste worked just fine in the old system...now I am putting in html code and massaging it and it still don't look right....

they need to put the old system back in until the new one works...simple html-lite emails shoudn't take more than 5 seconds to format....

Please do not use the aweber.com/users/broadcasts/add URL that some folks have mentioned. It's no longer supported and will be going away along with it could have unintended results as our backend infrastructure changes.

It's not linked from anywhere in the site on purpose. Continuing to use it will break things.

The message editors that are live should support your content. If you're seeing issues, please get in touch with our customer solutions team so we can better understand the problem you're encountering and find a solution.

      Thank you for responding Tom.

But please realize your new Drafts View or Folder has totally screwed up your Aweber system at least for some of your users. Like the ones who are complaining here and on your own blog. Maybe it's not happening for all of your users but there are a good chunk of us who are very unhappy at this point.

      https://blog.aweber.com/new-features...il-content.htm

I've just posted some new issues on your blog post about the Drafts folder. There are so many problems all of a sudden that you really need to revert back to the old system immediately.

Then once you get rid of all those bugs then you can consider trying to get the drafts view working.

Right now your system is making me waste a lot of time and it doesn't even have all of the functionality it used to have last week.

I can no longer format my messages the way I like.

New system is riddled with bugs.

And I have already spoken to three different customer support specialists at Aweber. It seems they have no idea how bad the problem really is.

And I have no time frame to expect when this myriad of problems will be fixed.

If it was one issue I could understand. But it's at least 10 different problems.

Sending out broadcasts has now become a nightmare.

        Roger,

I appreciate you taking the time to passionately share your feedback. Everyone's feedback is important and it helps improve AWeber. I'll try to give a bit more insight into why certain decisions were made and to provide a bit more context that seems to be missing from this thread.

        Some context:

19 of 47 comments on that blog post are AWeber team members, several more are multiple comments from the one or more people, with give or take about 25 total unique people commenting.

There are 110,000+ users of AWeber. Tens of thousands login daily.

You are clearly personally affected by the Drafts function release and I'm sorry for that. The majority of the 25 users commenting on the blog post were also using the "previous message editor" which you describe and that which any AWeber user that has signed up in the last 2 years has never seen nor had access to.

Several things that you comment below as being bugs are conscious functional decisions that I'll explain further.

Everyone here has access to all customer reported bugs along with the number of reports we've received about each bug. The most widely reported issue right now as it stands from our leaderboard is the copy include/exclude lists from previous broadcasts. It has been reported by 30 users across phone, email, and live chat.

Per our updated blog post and communication that we've emailed to those 30 users our team has already committed to getting the copy lists function live today.

        1. When you paste in everything becomes one long paragraph.
It's hard to tell from this single sentence whether that's something that's by design or something that might be a bug.

I'm guessing (please correct if I'm wrong) you are pasting in HTML paragraphs that might have had some line wrapping on them? You paragraphs should still have breaks between them. However, line wrapping HTML or other plain text content itself within a paragraph to make the line say 50 characters long is not a best practice these days. It breaks mobile email and is definitely not responsive from the huge variety of screen sizes people read email on these days. It used to be a best practice to make lines in email less than 70 characters or so, that's no longer true today as email clients will wrap it to the best width themselves.

It will be properly formatted in the HTML but then you'll have all sorts of extra spaces (2 extra lines) between paragraphs in the plain text version. So you have to go in and manually remove all of the spaces.
See above. #1 and #2 seem like the same thing.

See item #1. Line wrapping paragraphs manually in email is no longer best practice and is purposely not there anymore. What email client are you reading email on that's making those paragraphs extremely long? That line wrap tool is not in the current editor that tens of thousands of users have used over the past 2+ years.

To have to constantly enter that info is ridiculous.
This is a bug and is being corrected. It's intermittent for some people, we're still determining the specific cause.

Instead it just sent out to the main list and did not suppress the other lists. That was another major problem.

It's likely I just don't know how to use the new broadcast tool but those lists were initially checked off but their new DRAFTS page setup seemed not to have them there afterwords.
We've not had that reported from any other users before. Please contact our team or myself tomk @ aweber with more details about which specific message that was and when you might have created/sent it so we can look at our logs to troubleshoot.

You were needing to manually line wrap messages before by clicking a button. Now, email clients do the line wrapping for you automatically. The step you were doing before is no longer necessary.

And I suggest that editor should be kept for at least another 10 years. I have absolutely zero use for the other editors.
We release changes multiple times per week, sometimes multiple times per day. The benefit of using cloud based software is that you do always have the latest version. Sometimes, yes those workflows might change, but in the long run it's my belief that always having the latest version saves time and makes your business better. You wouldn't still want to be running the AWeber version from back in 1998 when I started the company and I sure wouldn't want to still have to support the literally thousands of different versions and iterations we've made since then.

I'm just guessing, but you've likely upgraded your computer, phone, word processor, spreadsheet, shopping cart, operating system, and a myriad of other tools in the past 10 years. If we kept everything for 10 years without making improvements or adopting the latests best practices our users would leave in droves for competitors who were iterating and making improvements.

No company has ever released software that was perfect. All software has bugs. I recognize that there are 2 bugs above which are affecting you and I can assure you I and the rest of the team take those reports seriously and are looking into their cause and resolution.

Thank you very much Tom for your replies. (If it is really you replying and not someone else for you.)

I have not had time to fully read your posts yet because I'm busy trying to figure out how to do my own mailings.

          New issue:

After having fully edited my emails and deleting all of the line breaks then I went back and made a small change to the html email.

So then I go back to the plain text email and in order to see the changes I pressed the "Auto" button because it seems to default back to the custom once you use it. And it seems the new changes I make in the HTML Editor do not get transferred over until you hit the "Auto" button again and then go back to hitting the "Custom" button.

Only problem is when I did that I lost all of my line spacing again. So I have to go in and remove three extra spaces between paragraphs yet again.

And any paragraphs that are next to each other are all of a sudden one paragraph break apart. So it takes quite a while to edit this properly.

Please realize I've been talking about this problem with another Aweber user I'm friends with and he's told me about problems he had that I did not even mention in my original post here.

If you look at all of the problems mentioned (not just the ones I specifically mentioned) you'll very likely find 10 of them. I have not done an exact counting. But whether it's 5 or 10 or more it's a serious issue for some of your users.

When I have more time I'll read your full post and respond if necessary.

Thank you for taking the time to respond,

Well...it looks like I found a way for my formatting problem at least...Instead of copying directly from scrivener...I copy into microsoft word and then copy from microsoft word into aweber...

Not optimal...but still better than what I was doing...that formatting issue was my biggest issue so I guess i'm allright for the time being..

      Sherman,

I tried your technique but using Open Office Writer. That made the html version have the correct formatting. But the auto generated plain text version has all sorts of spaces between paragraphs exactly as before. And I don't currently have Microsoft Word to try it exactly as you did it.

And some people are going to be receiving that plain text email so it needs to be formatted.

Did you check what happened to your plain text version? Did it have spaces between paragraphs or did it look fine?

      Thanks,

It just took me four minutes to remove all of the spaces from the plain text email.

Sometimes I send multiple emails in a day.

Then I'm going to have to manually select about 28 email lists to send to. That will be another 4 or 5 minutes absolutely wasted.

        Hope they fix this soon.

OK I found one advantage of using the old text editor.

You can format your message the way you'd like in there. Including the line breaks when you first paste into the plain text section. Then copy the plain text to the top or html editor and edit there as you want it.

Then just paste it into the new html editor. You'll still have to remove the line breaks from the plain text version but at least I can use the wrap long lines feature (of the old plain text version) and the shortened line length of about 65 characters wide remains.

So there is still some use for going to the old editor in terms of being able to format your email before pasting it into the new HTML editor.
