Buy a .com or use .wordpress.com

Hi,

I just joined the site and am getting into internet marketing. I want to create a blog about a passion I have ( lets say about trees), and use affiliate marketing to earn some income. My question is if I start a blog about trees. (ex. treeloveman.wordpress.com) is it worth is to pay the next domain and hosting fees to turn it into treeloveman.com? I want to make sure the blog I start putting my time into will allow me to affiliate market and will have the best results and ease of maintaining the site. For example , although .wordpress.com version is free, If they take a 25% cut of my marketing profits, I would much rather pay for domain/ hosting an not give them the cut.

Also, I am looking at getting domain/ hosting. What would your reccomend. I am currently using wordpress.com and may pay for hosting/domain and was also recommended hostgator.com

Thanks

Thanks for your time.

Invest in your own domain and hosting, it is cheap enough. Then you do not have to worry about your site getting deleted one day and losing everything.

Of course I would like to use the .com domain, I will never use the sub domain as .wordpress.com, if I have opportunity to buy the .com. The .com domain have the cost more than any other domain, but it should use for business. I mean if anyone wants to do business, he should use the .com domain. If you think the .com domain's cost is so high for you, you can use another cheap domain. I will never suggest you to use the .wordpress.com. Thanks a lot.

    .com domain suggested.

You can find good hosting service provider by googling, like "top 10 hosting services", you can check for host4offshore that is pretty good to me

I would suggest that you always go with the .com and own hosting if you are serious about making an earning online. It's better for branding, trust and control over your website.

The same answer .com domain is better. Also as you mentioned it these wordpress.com and other properties can close your blog any time if they get you doing affiliate stuff. I lost several blogs I created with wikidot.com in a day.

Grab yourself a domain and get started with virtual hosting.

    - You'll convert better.
    - Never build a business on a platform owned by someone else.
    - More available traffic channels.
    - More software (usually WP plugins) to aid growth.

I highly recommend going with a .com domain. Free blogs are good for testing purposes, but it sounds like you're a little more serious than that. If you have a niche locked down -- find a domain that can represent it well and then install the Wordpress CMS yourself (it's very easy).

Having a .com is much more professional. That's my two cents!

thanks for the replies. I was leaning towards a .com. So my other question, is it seems as though wordpress software/ template of websites can be used for almost all sites. Should I buy the premium $99 package with a domain or just use the free version and use another site for domain/ hosting purchuses. If so what packages are reccomended.

I plan on making 2-3 blog/ sites aimed at affiliate marketing. This is what I am concentrating on now and for the next couple months. I also have 1 customer already who wants me to desgin a website and have domain/ hosting for the site for 10 years, but I will be doing this after some practice with blogs. I looked at hostgator's baby package and it looks like I can host unlimited sites and have a domain for x amount per month. Any sugguestions would be great

One of the main advantage of using self hosted wordpress (.com) is that you can backup your site easily and automatically (using plugin). Backup regularly is the only safe practice, because no matter what, you site is still reside in a hosting company server, meaning they can close your site down anytime (especially if they received a DMCA complaint)

Are you talking about hosting or theme?

      Do you mean 2-3 blog in a hosting? Ex. treelovers.com, treehuggers.com or people.treelovers.com, animal.treelovers.com?

Do not get the one with a free domain, there is always string attach to it. You do now want to lose your domain name if you change your hosting company.

If you are going to setup blog for customers, it is best to get at least a reseller account. This way, each of your customer will be able to access their own cpanel and you have control to switch their website off if they miss their payment.

I think that the general consensus is to get your own domain and hosting independent of WordPress.com. Take both for a spin and you'll see why

I would agree with heruma. Get a reseller account if you are setting up blogs for customers.

Is the $99 for a premium theme or premium domain? Either way I'd shy away from those as a beginner. Start with more economical alternatives until you start showing a profit from what you are doing.

No brainer here. Wordpress.com is very limited to what you can do. You can literally get a .com domain name from GoDaddy for 99 cents. Just Google it. Add $5 a month for hosting and you are much better off.

You can even use wordpress within your own domain. Just do a YouTube search. Type in your hosting comapany + Installing WordPress.

get a domain from Godaddy and reseller hosting from Hostgator. they are super good. using them for more than 5 years and so far no issues. Install wordpress on your server itself so no one has the control of your site, it sits in your own server, even the database. payments and all stuffs no one takes commission coz the site is self hosted.. Pros answers are above which might have helped you already just wanted to share my happiness with Godaddy and Hostgator, they are super kool and support is all time.

You should invest in your own domain name and hosting, so that you have control over your content. I also don't think that the Wordpress.com blogs, where you're basically using a sub-domain allow you to use affiliate links (something you'll want to do) or build a list (something else you'll want to do), Before you purchase a domain name and stuff, you need to make sure that you research your niche (check for profitability, find enough products to promote, etc.).

First and foremost, I am very impressed by the speed and number of responses. But now it makes sense being this is a forum of some of the most active people working on the internet.

I am going with a .com, I definatly agree the .wordpress.com is a waste of time and jeopardizes the ownership of my site. To clear things up, my 2-3 blog goal would be about different topics and on different domains( ex. automotive care, treelovers, crabpeoplereviews) , targeted at different affiliate marketing advertisements. So i guess my only addition question at this time is going into this knowing that I am going to get several domains and hosting in the future, should I start out with a package that lets me do this or should I establish each site and host them individualy?

If you are ready with everything like your knowledge, skills and budget then start your blog with your own domain and hosting. However, if you are still figuring things out... I would recommend you try first with blogger.com. It is owned by google and crawled by google. Blogger blogs are more flexible when it comes to monetizing from your blog and will allow you to do affiliate offers and or adsense.

Once you have made some income or at least getting a lot of traffic from your blogger blog then you can have it transferred in your own domain and hosting.
