Do You Have All Your IM Folders and Files On More Than One Computer?

Perhaps a silly question, but I ask because I'm thinking I really need to find a way to 'sychronise' my laptop and desktop. I do 95% of my IM work on my laptop, but I'd like to do more on my desktop. The problem is that I have pretty much everything on my laptop - tools, products, folders, files, ebooks - you name it.

Instead of just sending things to myself by E-Mail(as I sometimes do with articles) or putting them on DVD's, I'm wondering if there is an easier way I have a big folder on my laptop called 'Marketing' - if I could somehow make that folder accessible on both computers, it would make things easier. Of course, I'd have to install any programs that are not on my desktop but it'd still make life easier.

Any suggestions? Apologies if this is a silly question - I know enough to get by when it comes to computers but I'm not the most technically minded :p

    Hello Liam,

I think what you need is a 'Wi-Fi' wireless network within your home. It's pretty easy to setup. Once you do that, you can access files on your laptop from your desktop pc and vice versa.

You will need to setup a Wi-Fi network for that which is not expensive at all.

Better still, you can set up a Bluetooth Wireless Network. It's pretty simple and a Google Search on the same should direct you to some guides

    Hope this helps.

I don't think you need such a huge backup drive. I have a USB key that's 4 gigs that I use to keep all my "need right now" stuff on. It's what I use as a "My Documents" folder on all my computers, though I do backup stuff I don't currently need onto 2 external book drives.

Additionally, the key has a USB-Bootable version of linux with a Windows-like UI, OpenOffice, and GIMP as well as web apps I use. I can literally do anything I need to do from that USB key, which can be booted on pretty much any computer that has USB. It's pretty neat to be able to turn ANY computer into MY computer.

      Love your idea Colin,

I keep all my backups in various cloud servers simply for the reason that I can access them from any computer in the world with Internet access. I have come to appreciate having a clutter-free computer since it runs much faster too.

Like you I'm using USB mini drives that contain all the must-haves. Enough to keep me productive on the move.

      autobackup software- services?

There are some software packages which automatically auto backup your files, so that you dont have to backup 2 lots of the Same file (1 old and one new)

can somebody please say some more about that, please

External hard drive is your best bet and if you don't wanna shell out upto $100 you can get a 4 Gig flash drive for about $20~30+ and it does the job perfectly fine.

I have my business on an external harddrive because I travel a lot.
The backups is on internal harddrives on several PCs. Weird, i know.

I use GoodSynch to manage the backups and synchronize everything. Excellent software from the company that made Roboform.

Dropbox seems good, but remember that this is a third party solution, and someone else is handling your data for you. If anything goes wrong with their servers, there is always the possibility things could be wiped out. I also think it'd be a pain to back up large video/picture files (and/or zipped files 100 Mb and up since uploads on even a fast cable connection are fairly slow). If you're using your own hardware for back ups, it'll occur a lot faster especially if you plug your computer into your home network or even connect via wi fi (transfers are exponentially faster this way on your own network), but this isn't an option with web-based service like Dropbox.

For a serious long-term solution that gives you absolute control over your data and allows it to be accessed from anywhere on the net, I'd recommend this expandable solution from Western Digital -

    Hi guys

I have it all on one laptop and then the same folder again on my hubbys and then a backup copy.

I could very easily have it on just the one but we are often working from similar folders so it makes life so much easier.

    Kind regards

Monika, cloud services do work really well if your file sizes are not too big, but if you're regularly working with gargantuan video/graphics files, then nothing beats a home server running on your very own network! The upload of large files to the "cloud" would be painfully slow, and quite frankly I think it'd be incredibly frustrating.

      Hi Paulie,

I see where you come from and yes it makes perfect sense. I don't work with large graphics so for me the clouds are ample. Plus Google Docs has now a new upload feature where we can upload zip files for storage only. The first GB is free and then it costs 0.25 per gig I think. Not bad to store files IMHO.

I will re-check Dropbox too because now I've got the Mac and still a PC it sounds like file sharing will be child's play indeed.

      Cheers

    DROPBOX

I have 3 macs and 3 pc's (don't ask...) and I was using the 'skunk works' solutions of an external drive or email or worse ... idisk ;-)

However I switched to DROPBOX and presto: cross platform use, no glitches and super slick.

By the way, for those Mac-ophiles, you can store key data files on your dropbox account so that all your macs can share it. I use 1password and store the data file so that every machine has the latest password and login details. Just a suggestion.

    Cheers.

The best solution I found (also, is incredibly free ) is not to synchronize anything.
I simply have all my information on the laptop and access the laptop from the desktop, using LogMeIn (free edition).
    http://LogMeIn.com

I have a wireless router. The laptop is connected wireless and the desktop is connected through cable. Both connections are secured.

I also have 32 LCD TV and a Microsoft Wireless Kit (Keyboard + Mouse). Staying in bed, with the wireless keyboard on my lap, the Blue Track mouse near me (it works even on folded bedsheet) and seeing on the big screen all the information from the laptop, now - that's life! Once you get the taste, it's hard to switch to some other methods.

Why not connecting directly the laptop to the TV? Because the laptop doesn't have HDMI output, while the desktop computer has.

Thanks, that sounds great - I'm kinda looking for a cheaper solution though(if there is one)
I'm lazy and didn't read the replies...

I keep everything backed-up and an 8 gig thumb drive. Really don't need all that much space for IM stuff unless you're makin' movies n' stuff.

I don't remember it being very expensive.
