GASP! Are Aweber and Getresponse Down?

Hi guys,

I'd like to schedule a mailing, but Aweber's down here. Anyone experiencing the same?

Thanks,
Michael

P.S. Getresponse is down too!

You would have thought that companies the size of Aweber and GetResponse would pay for redundant generator power in the event of a power outtage etc.

My guess is that something really quite serious has happened at the datacentre...We could be down for a while.

Either that or the whole datacentre has just one source of upstream connectivity and somebody's drilled through the pipe or something (highly unlikely!)

All I know is that I'm getting mails left, right and centre asking me while my links are all broken.

        Grrrr.

Hell, there are two or three warriors here that with their lists combined alone you could rule the world within minutes. How would you like that Pinky?

As far as just Aweber (which I use),
I can't imagine the emails they are getting, their help desk probably exploded hours ago. Somewhere there is an admin on the verge of spontaneously combusting

It'll be out of Aweber's hands anyway...

Find out who owns the datacentre and look for service updates from them.

Google already has all the data they could ever wish for from us...

And now you want them to host your list?

Dude. After a year or two, Google will knock on your door and "spam slap" you for a 0.1% spam rate. (No arguments. Its google).

            0.1% is far too reasonable.

They'd be all over you like a cheap suit the moment a single person pressed the "report as spam" button.

And affiliate links in your emails? Ha, yeah right!

This is exactly why I use a self hosted solution. If my servers go down I can deal with that but when a major datacentre is out then they really have you by the balls. The sad thing is that since your mailing list host is down you can't even reach out to your subscribers to let them know what's going on and I doubt that many of them even know it's aweber's fault.

I suggest you all start writing the best apology letters you can ever hope to write if this isn't fixed soon. Better yet you better hope when it is back up they haven't lost your entire list. Hope you guys make frequent backups.

Not sure exactly where in the States they're based but even East coast it's 5:12AM don't forget.. Most staff haven't even thought about waking up to deal with the situation or even just update us!

Anyone here into astrology? (I don't think so).

Mercury is going retrograde on the 20th.

"Since Mercury rules communication, it's said that everything goes haywire in that area -- emails get deleted or bounced back, mail is returned, calls go out into the ethers, etc. Some people find that their computers go on the fritz or phone lines go down." (I'm not sure if I can post links here so I won't).

This thing, about 3 weeks long (if I remember correctly), happens 3-4 times a year and some people experience the effects early. So remember to BACK UP everything and be MORE PATIENT as there tends to be a lot of misunderstanding and miscommunication during this period.

However, it is also true that we attract what we focus on, so my suggestion is to not focus on the problems and instead focus on what you want.

Oh, I'm new to IM and don't even have a list yet so I'm safe for now.

Woowoo stuff. Hey, I think I just found my niche.

            Yeah, I get it.

Can we do anything about it?

            No.

Is it totally out of our control?

            Yes.

As I've gotten older, I've learned to accept the things that I can't change.

I use Aweber too. Have a list of over 6,000. I lost subscribers too,
probably. I lost money too, probably.

Since I can't undo what's been done and don't plan on changing my
AR company, no sense in my getting all hot and bothered over it.

Now, if Aweber closes their doors and I lose my whole list, then THAT is
            something to get upset about.

But not this. In the grand scheme of things, it isn't that big a deal.

I assume millions of dollars have been lost during this down time since so many people use them.
I would love to see the math behind that assumption.

The outage extended from 2am until 6:30am, on a Friday morning in the US. If you're going to experience .6% downtime, that's the time to have it. And yes, that's what it works out to over the course of a month. 6/10ths of 1%.

Taking the effect of the time into account, it's probably more like 1/10th of 1% of revenues for a month. Expecting something to be much more dependable than that is not realistic, in my view.

As far as having more redundancy in the systems at these companies, consider the impact that would impose on pricing. Think about the technology involved to sync those massive databases across multiple data centers, and ask if you're really ready to pay that much extra cost for an increase of .1% in results.

And then there's the fact that most of the people using their services wouldn't be making much, if anything, from automated email service without these kinds of companies. And they'd take much longer to spot and fix technical problems on their own servers, if they ran self-hosted list software.

One would expect an "email delivery pro" to understand such things.

          The voice of reason.

I'd expect nothing less from you Paul.

Thanks for putting this into perspective.

I wonder if I'm the only one who found this outage annoying simply because I was trying to download some reports and those IMers forms wouldn't work.

They certainly lost some subscribers but I wanted what they had to offer enough to leave the pages open until Aweber resolves the issue.

From this standpoint what I would like to explain is that I initially figured it was all the IMers fault and did some cursing of them and their web programmer but after going to a completely unrelated site and having the same problem that's when I gathered it was a larger scale issue.

To be honest this seems like a perfect opportunity for a PR campaign. Maybe some of you guys with established list can offer some kind of "Sorry Aweber screwed up" bonus campaign.

It is very rare for these 2 companies to be down.

If you find any of them to be down, just know that this is very temporary.

The last time I checked and Getresponse was down, it was only down for like an hour or two.

This is why I host my own mail.... No matter how reputable a company, I want to know if it screws up I can fix it. If I can't I only have myself to blame - or the option of finding someone who can. Third party services have you by the...... proverbials....

That's kind of an extreme assumption. Their average account has, according to the last I recall Tom saying, somewhere under either 500 or 2000 active subscribers. The rate you are assuming would mean the average account got well over 100 new subscribers per day, which seems unlikely.

Again, if you take the time of day into account, it'd be more like 300-600, which I would bet against. And that's for 1 million, not the 2 or more "millions" you suggested originally.

300 per account per day on average would mean 15,000,000 new confirmed subscribers at the service every day. (450 MILLION every month!) It would also exceed the total in most accounts within 2-7 days.

The math doesn't work. But you at least stated your assumptions.

I should mention, I say that with all the love in the world.

I have my own control issues and maybe a few anger issues as well; like why this thread isn't fully funded? http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-daughter.html
