What Would You Do If You Had To Start Over From Scratch?

Hi Warriors

I'd like to know what you would do if you have to start over from scratch with your business?

I've seen a lot of threads on this forum by people asking for advice on which products or courses that can help them make money, and I've done my fair share of jumping from one WSO to another in the past as well.

I thought that besides from satisfying my own curiousity some of the ideas in this thread might inspire people to pick a business model right for them.

I would set up an affiliate landing page and write articles to drive traffic to that landing page.

I'd pick something that I'm good at / know a lot about - or find someone who has skills in a certain area..

Find newbie questions about that topic.. and answer them in detail, in PDF format... explaining what they need to do, but not how to do it.

Use it as a lead magnet to build a qualified list.

The ebook would contain affiliate links and a special offer to a product that explains how to do X, Y and Z.

On the download page I would place a one time offer, incase they download the ebook but don't go through it.

Then I would segement my list; subscribers and buyers. Both lists get tons of free high quality content, to help build a relationship.

On the buyers list I would eventually promote high ticket items and a continuity program to repeat customers.

Thanks for all your replies so far.

@ Mick Meaney: I like your approach, and I really agree on picking an area, that you know stuff about and one that has your interest. If you just go where the money is, you might be able to make money, but you probably will not feel much joy and fullfillment about your business in the long term.

I would make sure that I took action and not get distracted by other offers.

Probably go with product creation and use affiliates to promote them.

I would try to ignore all the "Shiny Things" offers and focus on tried and true strategies. Article marketing, blogs promoting affiliate goods and services and especially content creation are great places to focus on.

I believe that content creation is one of the best opportunities now and in the future. It DOES require work but if you can do some research and have talent putting this information into words, there is demand.

Start out on the freelance sites. Once you've established a reputation, you can branch out and develop clients who need more dedicated support.

The good news is that the Internet marketplace is always changing so you have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of something big all the time. However stay focused on one or two proven strategies but keep your sights on interesting new ops as well.

You ultimately only need two skills: An ability to sell and the ability to write. Learn these well, first and foremost. Everything else (including online/offline) is just an extension of these essential core skills.

If I had to start over from scratch...

I would *build a list*. Doesn't matter in what market
as long as it's big enough to expand and leverage.

Those marketers generally are: Relationships, Golfing,
Weight loss, & Finances (making money).

I've done a lot of things to make money and did well,
but I always faced a major problem: I had big money
        but no ASSETS.

...and when the money ran out, I was left not only
without money, but without any assets to make that
        money back.

...starting from scratch every time. It was exciting at
first. Got old fast. Grown-ups and real professionals
build lists and assets. And, I'm sticking to it.

        This is also true.

If you can sell and write, you will never go broke and
        you will never starve.

I don't claim to be the best marketer and salesperson
in the world, but I can link it to knowing how to write
        and sell very well.

...problem is although on paper learning these 2 skills
sound like a piece of cake, it's very tough to get used
to if you come from a corporate or zero sales history.

Selling & Marketing in my opinion are the most difficult
challenges I've faced in my life, understanding women
        is a distant second

I'd start right there! I only half mean that as a joke. Seems the lion's share of IM types are men. If those men learn to sell to women, they could make a killing.

The part about learning to sell is something that I really didn't get for a very very long time. I thought that by being an affiliate you could skip the learning to sell part and leave that to the merchants.

Over the last couple of months or so though, I've really started to realize, that having an online business isn't that much different than an offline one, at least when it comes to selling.

About learning how to write, I must admit, that I haven't given that much thought to that. But I guess it just comes down to being able to cumminicate effectively, which is off course mostly done by writing when doing business online, where in an offline business there would be more cummincation by phone or in meetings.

I'd love to comment on a few more of the replies, but It's getting late here, so I will be back for that tomorrow.

What I did not know when I started was the importance of the domain name. So whatever the niche, I will make sure to have a domain with the correct attributes, such as good keyword, good branding concept, no hyphens, preferably .com, and depending on budget I may pay for a domain I want instead of registering another one I do not like as much.

I'd first and foremost buy a top level domain, install latest wordpress in the root directory, write 2-3 posts per week, SEO the entire blog/posts, set up all the proper settings to get top ranks, install all proper plugins to make the site look awesome, promote affiliate offers, not waste time with blogger blogs that get shutdown, focus more on content creation than expecting tons of sales, bookmark my posts in social networks, article marketing for backlinks and some traffic, submit to directories, increase backlinks to main site and posts, choose a niche that you can write 2-3 posts per week on forever, rinse and repeat on blog 2, 3, 4... etc.

    Blogs, you can't beat'em..

I'd do what I still do every day - concentrate on driving traffic for a niche. Once I have traffic monetization is secondary. People spend entirely too much time thinking about how they are going to make money. Everyone makes money the same exact way.

They get traffic be it through print ads, television ads, SEO, direct mailings radio spots store placement in high traffic malls etc. IF there ever was a bad question it s the one asked here almost every day.

"What must I do to makes some money online?"

Its wrong because the focus is wrong. the right question is

"What niche can I operate in where I (in particular )can get ton loads of people to visit my page, website or business?

A company with a constant stream of potential customers Will make good money eventually. Even if they sell the wrong product at first or use the wrong setup as long as they do nothing by way of rep to destroy that stream they will be able to correct it and make money.

Thats why all the good IMers build their name and brand over everything else. thats where you start and thats where you should continue to live. Unfortunately many of them also forget what matters and start asking the question of making more money online and end up selling enough crap products the stream wises up and runs away - or the authorities knock on the door.

I would make money by writing articles and creating Squidoo lenses instead of spending money building my websites with various webmasters, before learning internet marketing.

I made many mistakes and I spent too much in the beginning because I completely ignored how the internet works, but I was too confident. I thought that everything would be easy for me because of the superiority of my products. I didn’t imagine that I would have to face a fierce competition and I wouldn’t even have the chance to reach my audience.

There are billions of users online, but they see only a few websites; the ones displayed in the first results pages… There are many ‘details’ that the gurus never mention in their lessons…

Now that I’ve learned the basics about internet marketing I understand how naïve I was in the beginning. You must Study internet marketing very well before spending your money without knowing what you are doing.

I would learn about keyword research and SEO sooner than I did.

I would use that knowledge to then build blogs, get them ranked high on the Big G.

I would have promoted services that have a recurring monthly commission sooner than I did, rather than making money on adsense clicks or clickbank 1 time sales of ebooks or whatnot.

I would have started building a list sooner than I did.

I am starting over from scratch (by choice; I'm just not happy with my business, and want to be happy with it, so I'm rebuilding it), so let me explain - in a very general sense - what I am doing.

    - Frequent small products in bronze/silver/gold/platinum versions, promoted through an ongoing stream of free content.

    - Reliable feed of products on a tight schedule. This is the hard part. I typically build large products that come out every few months. I want to change that, and develop a huge library of small products: one problem, one solution.

    - Membership programs at the same four levels, so you can subscribe to the product releases. Once I get step two working effectively, I'm going to move up to this.

    - Occasional releases of large, monolithic products like I'm already known for doing every few months... except bigger and more comprehensive and higher quality. I'm targeting two of these annually, and would like to get one out around the same time the memberships are up and running.

    - At least one annual appearance as a speaker at a live event. This is something I'd like to do before the end of the year, and if all else fails I may simply have to do my own event.

    - Coaching and consulting services, once everything else is working reliably and I'm happy with that aspect of things.

If you are paying attention to this industry at all, you'll be able to recognise this as Brendon Burchard's "Millionaire Messenger Money Map." You'll also see a lot of Frank Kern and Jason Moffatt reflected in the way I'm doing it... along with a hefty dose of Tim Castleman... tempered with a lot of direct guidance (i.e. "these people actually talk to me") from Dennis Becker, George Sepich, and Bond Halbert.

I did a lot of stuff wrong in my first two years of IM, and I'm looking very much to other people who have been there and made a success of themselves over time. So what looks like name-dropping up there is really me saying "look, there are people out there who are where you want to be, and all you have to do is go find out how they got there." For all the anti-guru rhetoric people spew on here, gurus are called that for a reason. It's just as bad to ignore what they are as it is to believe they're something they aren't.

Sounds like an interesting project. Best of luck with it.

I really agree on looking to the gurus for inspiration. It's my impression that many people get caught up in trashing the gurus for one reason or another. But no matter what we think of the gurus nothing can take away from them, that what they are doing works, and there's alot to learn from them.

I guess you could say I'm starting over from scratch right now. I'm a former eBay Powerseller (about 5 years ago) and I had an eBook store.

Right now what I'm doing is learning as much as I can about link building, SEO, social media and such. And it's paying off. After my blog gets going really good I'll know exactly how to make any site rank and convert.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm learning and growing at the same time.

Wanna hear how my blog is only three months old and already getting search traffic?

I'm loading it with videos. Video tutorials, video series, social media videos. I try very hard not to do a post with at least one video.

First would be mindsetting. Prepare for mental hardwork, and at the same time think BIG!

Then think of an audience for you, the basic startegy may be becoming an affiliate first. You can build your own list from here.

and then do your homework...research...the best keywords
when you've found that find the best program where you can sell something related to the keyword.

You have to draw people, so make or get yourself a good content...and use the most effective ways to get traffic

Yeah its basic...but then that's where one usually starts...

    11. I Would Not Go to My Next "Big Idea" Until The Current "Big Idea" Was Implemented
    12. I Would Not Promote Anything that I didn't believe in

    14. I Would Not Interact With Bull****ters-Alot of IMer's talk/know IM but don't implement: Avoid em'

Honestly, I would purchase aweber, and create some accountability! its what, <20 bucks... not going to break the bank, but will keep your ass in gear and working towards your goal! No one wants to pay for something they don't use, nor do they want to admit failure and cancel their account.

I would have started about 10 niche blogs and add unique authority posts to each n a consistent basis and set each up with an autoresponder with 10 autoresponder series to go with them.

I would have made sure the the on-site SEO was flawless and then promoted them with a little article marketing.

Ultimately I would dump the losers, keep the winners, replace the losers with new niche blogs...rinse repeat...indefinitely.

That setup pretty much has it all.

I would start the way I started which was trying different things to see what worked for me and what didn't.

We all have different skills and knowledge and this is why what works for one person is not necessarily going to work for another.

What I would do differently though, is what I did once I found what worked for me.

Instead of continuing to spend most of my time testing new things, I would spend less time testing and more time building on what I found to be working.

In addition, I would have started contributing to the community earlier (I only started doing this very recently) and I would also put list building at the top of my list of things to do.

I would pick a topic/niche that you're really passionate about and enjoy, and do some short videos talking about it. Then offer them for free with your 'tips' and have a squeeze page to build up a list with AWeber of people interested in your passion. Then play around with doing some live webinars... cause webinars are always fun
