N00b to web design, need some pointers

Hi everyone

this is my first post. I am a new internet marketer. I have tried and failed a few campaigns, not made any money, but im ready to try more and keep trying until I succeed.

One of my current projects involves me creating a website, something I am having a lot of trouble with, as I have never done it before. I have hosting and everything, the site works. Its just really really ugly, so I doubt it will bring any conversions.

How can I learn to make my site look good? How did all of you learn? I know Im not the only affiliate marketer who started out with no knowledge of web design, so I want to know what others did when they were starting out.

Any response is appreciated

thanks,

eitan

    Just start out utilizing templates.

Are you building websites in Wordpress? That's the best CMS in my opinion.
there are so many templates (free and non) to choose from so you don't have to worry about designing anything yourself.

Never hurts to learn some basic html/css though if you ever want to do some minor tweaking.

I started from scratch. I tried templates but i couldnt figure out how to bring them into dreamweaver. If i could do that i would be able to get this site out much faster.

I would try setting your site up on wordpress.

        1. it is very user friendly
        2. the search engines love wordpress and rank it very well (as long as you have some decent on site seo done)

If you have hosting with cpanel you can basically install wordpress with a few clicks.

Now there are tons of free and paid themes for wordpress to make it look good and convert.

just youtube wordpress tutorials or google it and you will find more than enough free info out there to get your site up and running.

        hope this helps

I would strongly suggest that you use Wordpress.org to build a self-hosted website. There will, of course, be a learning curve, but it's the choice of many thousands of IMers.

As you develop your skills, you will be able to create a great website.

Surprisingly it's often reported that a simple ugly site actually converts better than a slick overly commercial looking design. Big timers split test both.

Why not start with a theme or html template, it's useful to do some html as an exercise so you better know how to supervise the outsourcer that a successful marketer would employ so his time may be better spent researching and designing campaigns.

    Hey There,

If you are serious about learning how to develop websites then you should definitely check out W3Schools Online Web Tutorials They have tutorials and reference pages for all the HTML & CSS you will need.

If it's more of a means to an end then you are probably better of using a content management system such as WordPress. There are thousands of themes created for platforms like this so you can get a great look out of the box (often free) and you will have a much shorter learning curve!

Just my 2 cents: Unless you plan to make money building web sites for others, it's best to just learn to get it done, no need to be an expert at it, and for that you only need to know a LITTLE language such as html and then use templates or build your sites at Wordpress. Wordpress has the added advantage of giving your site quite a bit of google-readiness. I don't know any CSS - just basica html - but have been able to avoid it while building my own web sites.

I use an Allwebco template and I use it within Dreamweaver. The thing about Allwebco is they give really great, clear step by step instructions so you really don't need to know much at all. It does help if you have a basic knowledge of HTML but no CSS is required. Once you buy the template you can use it for many different sites, just change the photos and page menu and such... which is easy to do. If you want to see a couple of sites I made using the same template pm me.

Most changes can be made within Dreamweaver without changing any CSS stuff for these web templates. The one time I wanted to change something that I couldn't do because I didn't know CSS, I wrote tech support and they got back to me within 24 hours and showed me what to do.

As for learning CSS I don't have experience but I hear good reports re learning all sorts of software and stuff from lynda.com .
