I would love to set up my sites faster and I can see the benefit of setting up a "template" Wordpress install with my favorite theme and plugins already in there. Is there a way (hopefully easy) to clone an install into a new domain?

You could perform an install with your themes/plugins all activated. Then export the database. The next time you install, upload the cloned database and the plugins, that should do the trick. -Scott |

Is there any software that will handle it? Seems like it may be tougher than I thought!

Copying all the files from your installation and backing up the MySQL database is essentially what you need to do, I do this all the time to move WordPress (and Joomla) configurations from my local LINUX test server to my HostGator hosted domains. On the target server you will first need to build a MySQL database, and you will need to adjust the configuration file (wp-config.php) in WordPress to reflect the new database and its login information. Then restore your MySQL Files and you should be good to go. One fly in the ointment might be the frequent updates to WordPress - your "master" version will get outdated pretty rapidly. Bill |

There may be some software, I'm not sure. But it's really not that hard. Keep all of your plugins/themes in a folder, upload them to the appropriate directories. As for the database, it can easily be imported/exported in PHPmyadmin. I can't really explain every step here, but once you do it once or twice it's pretty easy. Here's what a quick Google search brought up... phpMyAdmin: Backup and Restore Wordpress Database |

Hi, I am not sure if this will exactly do what you want, but these two theme editors were discussed in a thread yesterday. I'm thinking, once you have a theme saved that you like, it could be simple to upload the same thing to a new domain??? Not exactly a cloner, but could do the trick. I didn't bookmark the thread but I did save both URLs as I thought they would be helpful later. Hope this helps. From my tech gal, don't ask me what it means... ![]() Do a full backup of your master site (files and database, save database with option delete if exists). install the new site via fantastico. paste the files with option "skip all". upload the database over the new one. it is the same procedure used to recover a back up site if you are ever hacked btw. Like the site is different, do a full link checkup. RDG |

Here is what I do.. Copy your public_html folder to your PC Step 1...Create a new account with your new domain name. Step 2... Create a database, user name and password. Step 3...Upload the HTML folder to your new domain VIA ftp. Step 4...Edit your wp-config.php file with your database, user/password. Step 5...Install your new WP Step 6...Activate your plugins, change the header image and the settings etc. Step 7...Go to work |

Helpful post from mywebwork definitely; I would think you would need to do a full backup of your main site first including all of your files and database, and then install your new site via Fantastico. Then paste your new files completely over the previous one by skipping all and uploading over the previous database. Its worthwhile doing a full link checkup when you've finished to make sure all of your links are accounted for. Hope this helps!

Hi, I use WPCloner from mass-automation.com. I recommend it, although I'm using the old version, not the new hosted version. |

I know this is a bit of an old post, but there has been a new player on the market that might be of interest. Its a simple script that you add to your directory, navigate to and it will clone. The beauty of it is that the clone file is something that can be created as a purchasable item, as they have their own marketplace for these cloned installations that they are starting. Its got some serious legs. Anyway, I wrote about it at this URL: My Perfect WordPress Clone Unveiled! I've also thrown in a clone that I created that you are free to use and test on it, etc. |
