Traffic Exchanges - How do they work?

I am looking to get traffic for my site (like everybody else) and I was wondering how traffic exchanges work exactly. Is joining a traffic exchange a set and forget type thing? Do you have to actively search hundreds of other pages just to get hundreds of hits to your own site? As an advertiser, what would I have to do? Finally, what is the traffic quality like? Thanks.

To get "free" traffic, yes you do.

Is joining a traffic exchange a set and forget type thing?
Only if you pay for hits.

Finally, what is the traffic quality like?
Like people are just opening your site to get traffic to theirs, for the most part, useless.

    Mostly worthless traffic

but if you exchange banner with similar niche site, it may work.

I do safelist marketing, which is in the same vein as traffic exchanges.

When you join, you upload the link for your splash page (landing page). You get credits for viewing other peoples ads, and they get credits for viewing yours.

If you're a premium member, it could be a set-and-forget thing (for a short period of time) as you'll automatically get a certain number of credits each month. But even if you're a premium member you'll still need to view other members sites. A pack of monthly credits will only take you so far.

The main difference between freebie and premium membership is the amount of credits you get for viewing an ad. A free member may get half a credit. A premium member may get 3 credits. Obviously as a premium member you'll get more credits for far less work.

I know others have already thrown out the "worthless" card... and everybody is entitled to their opinions.

But I work in this industry every day. I'm a premium member of 23+ different safelists. I also have memberships at a handful of traffic exchanges. (Safelists work better for me.) I can tell you with 100% confidence, it is NOT worthless traffic if you're selling something these people want.

This is a sub-niche of internet marketers. It's NOT a Warrior Forum crowd.

You have to approach this crowd with a different mindset than you would coming here. Even though we all want to make money online, traffic exchange people have very different demands. It's like trying to sell cat food at a dog park. Even though they're both animals, they don't eat the same thing.

I'm convinced that's the main reason why most internet marketers fail to do well with traffic exchanges and safelists.

The best way to master this market is to immerse yourself in it and observe the types of ads being run. If you just look at the ads, it's a big clue as to what's working here - especially if you're a member of several different exchanges. Even better, look at HOW they market their offers. What types of pages do they use?

Marketing on traffic exchanges is just like marketing anywhere else. If you don't understand the audience, you're going to fail. If you don't want to test your ads, you're going to fail.

I wish you luck with whatever you decide!

I can simplify it for you, I think. The question is: are you wanting to get traffic exchange users as visitors to your opt-in page, to build your list from them, because you're promoting something specifically relevant to other traffic seekers?

If the answer to that question is "no", then you can't benefit from this.

As any TE owner will confirm for you, if you ask them, to benefit from TE traffic, you have to start by building a list, and you have to be doing it with a view to promoting something for which TE users are the exact, targeted traffic you need. Otherwise you're wasting your time and effort. It's about as simple as that. There's no point in trying to sell violins in a fish-market. You might find the occasional customer who was out buying haddock and plaice and happens to want a violin as well, but it's against the odds and that isn't a sensible place for a violin-seller to rent a market stall.

As usual Alexa hit the nail on the head, if you plan on sending TE traffic to a sales page your embarking on a hopeless journey...

It may be useful for an opt-in page, but I'd be sure to track it, because most TE traffic is low quality, I'm always afraid it would cloud my true conversion rate... By tracking it, you can figure out if its worth your time by comparing it to higher quality traffic stats...

You have only part of Alexa's reply correct! They can be useful if you are offering a report on what it is that they are there looking for, and that my friend is traffic.

What's the point in wasting time by visiting other people's pages, the same they do to your site.
So in a sense it is worthless to be visiting other pages to get hits to yours; hits which will not convert.
I have tried on couple of occasions and my experience is traffic exchange is simply useless [though I might be wrong for other niches]

I'd say it's some of the most least qualified traffic on the planet.

    (lol).

If you want to target that market, remember one thing.

They're typically broke people who are trying to get free traffic.

So, if you put an offer in front of them that is more worthy of their time than what they're doing, maybe you can make it profitable?

    Just my $.02

Many people on traffic exchanges are serious PTC earners who use traffic exchanges for direct referrals so I wouldn't say that all of them are broke. :p

        He didn't.

Nobody is seriously earning from traffic exchanges except maybe the traffic exchange owner.

Traffic from traffic exchange networks are useless. You can get them only to increase the visitors count but from the profitability/conversion perspective they never work.Best is to stick with free option like SEO and paid advertising.

Can you get free traffic from them? Yes. Are you better off PAYING for some traffic? Yes.

The thing one has to bear in mind is that burnout rate in people new to IM is very high and this is exacerbated by an insistence to run everything on a shoestring and hope for amazing results.

I'm not knocking anyone short on funds - you gotta do what you gotta do, but IF you do have a budget you can allocate to getting traffic (paid) then do not skimp upon it.

Yes it does if you have upgrades at the most popular ones.If you plan to sit and click for credit then no it won't work.
