How do you save your precious bookmarks?

igoogle has a way to save your bookmarks so that you can access them from any computer but you have to do it manually. Do you know of another way that is faster/easier/better? Any suggestions greatly appreciated ! Thank you!

I thought if you used a service like Onlywire.com which bookmarks multiple sites that you could then access them anywhere by just logging into your account. If that is what you mean?

Hmm, if you just mean having a way to quickly access your most-used sites from any computer...then I know of one way that's pretty simple and should work for pretty much any site, any computer:

Carry around a USB storage drive with a Word document in it that basically consists of a list of your most-used websites. Setting it up is pretty easy, and you can add to your list no matter what computer you're on. Keeping a USB drive is pretty handy anyways for anyone who uses computers for a living...and a bottom-of-the-barrel one can be extremely inexpensive.

Keep it on your keychain and you'll always have it...and wherever you are, you can open it up, click the hyperlink, and it'll open up the computer's default browser and autonavigate to the page. If you happen to find another page you want to add to your master bookmark list, you can copy/paste the URL and slap it into your USB drive document...quick and easy saving no matter where you are.

Plus, this lets you keep your bookmarks organized however you could possibly want...it's a little "different" than having everything stored online, but in my opinion is far more reliable and keeps it "in your hands." If you're worried about losing your USB drive, just make a backup of the Word file on your primary computer and synch them every so often.

Export them from your browser as an HTML file. You can upload the file to a server, carry it on a USB drive, whatever. No need to spend time creating or updating a Word doc.

In Firefox, go to the bookmark menu, and click on Organize Bookmarks. Then pick the Export HTML option from the Import and Backup menu. The process is very similar for Explorer.

This is what I do, however, I find it to be kind of lacking. You have to remember to make a new, updated copy of the file every time you add a bookmark. I inevitably forget and then, when I'm away from home or whatever, the file is always missing that newest bookmarks that are on my main computer.

Ahh, now that's a pretty interesting piece of information. I'm not extremely tech-savvy myself, so I didn't know you could do that. Basically makes a simple web-page that links to all your bookmarks, if I'm following you correctly?

Yeah, that's a lot simpler...I still hold steadfast by the use of the USB though. Keeps it on-hand and easily-accessed no matter where you are.

If you use firefox, go to foxmarks.com and sign up. You can upload all your bookmarks to them which is really handy for back up. Also it is easy to export them as a file to your docs. That's if you have ff. You don't need foxmarks for that.

And then if you want to synchronize another computer just log in from that one and it will sync them. I have been using this for years and it saved my bacon once. It is a free ff add on, you can download it from the ff site.

You have the option of including your passwords in the foxmarks back up but I've been a bit reluctant to do that.

And you can also log in from another computer at work for example and access your bookmarks without downloading them.

I also use foxmarks and just love it. It's had a recent brand upgrade and is now called xmarks. I think I'd go crazy between my desktop and laptop without it!

It also has a great feature to synchronize your stored passwords within firefox, which you may or may not be comfortable doing. I do use it, but I never story anything that sensitive within firefox anyhow.

      I agree. Foxmarks.com is amazing.

I recently had an internal drive crash and was able to get a new iMac, plug in my external drives (where I save everything), load up foxmarks.com and voila....back to normal.

I also access it from computers I use at different locations as I bookmark many sites.

      Automatic synchronization as well.

Delicious for me too. As long as you tag when you bookmark with the bookmarklet, your entire bookmark collection becomes self-organizing as well as available anywhere.

For IE users, I did the following:

First, I still use IE 6 because I'm scared to use anything higher. LOL! This works for
    versions 5.5 & 6.0. (Yes, I have Firefox)

1.) Up to the left of my screen, I clicked on File.
2.) Then clicked on Import and Export.
    3.) Then clicked Next.
    4.) Clicked Export Favorites.
    5.) Clicked Next.

You'll then see all the list of folders you have in your Favorites. It defaults and sits
on the Main "Favorites" tab. I left it there to save ALL.

    6.) I then clicked Next.
7.) Then Next one more time.
8.) It will then save the info in your folder marked My Documents as an HTML file.

When it was done, I went to my folder marked My Documents and dragged it to my
    desktop.

I then plugged in my USB flash drive and put the html file bookmark there. However,
I did change the name to... "bookmarks May 25 09" for easier reference.

Hope that helps. I sure would hate for my 'puter to crash and I lose it all. LOL!

Seems like alot of work, I just click one button The rest is automated so I can access it anywhere

My computer recently crashed but my bookmarks (all 400 or so of them) were all synced with Foxmarks, so I didn't lose a thing as everything else was on external drives, including a disc image of the computer.

When my PC crashed a few years ago, I DID lose all my bookmarks before I ever thought of backing them up, which can be a real shame if one bookmarks swipe files and resources that help them in business

Yes, you are correct. It wasn't worth the one minute 18 seconds it took me to, again, move all my favorites to another flash drive. By the way, 400 bookmarks is hardly anything. Should see all mine. LOL!

I can access my Favorites from anywhere too... right from my own pocket... now with DOUBLE-BACKUP! May seem tedious, but wasn't anything really.

Thanks you guys, esp. Paul and Lloyd. I was not aware of foxmarks.com. They also have a very useful mobile version. Since I use firefox for all the seo plugins, but iPhones only sync with safari through iTunes. Now I can sync to my firefox bookmarks!

I've had problems with Firefox and progressive degradation: you backup the bookmarks file but don't notice that Firefox has been losing bookmarks everyday until they all dissapear. Then you need to go back to all your backups and cross-reference them to recover everything...

I still haven't found a satisfying bookmark solution. For now I just add them to Firefox and Google Documents as a backup.

That is complete news to me. I have been using ff for years and have never had that problem. I would want to check that out and maybe try installing it again. Maybe download Avast and install it to get their boot time scan which is really good. I have never heard of that happening with ff before and really don't think it is typical.

There is just a bit of mysterious evil lurking in the crevices of a computer and with a problem like that I would try to track it down...and kill it!
