Default Open Letter To New Warriors

Note: Of late, we've had a large number of new members joining the Warrior Forum. With the economy in the state it's in and many losing jobs right now, it's easy to see why many want to start making money online. But, there are numerous pitfalls - so this letter.

Dear New Warrior

If you've come here to become an Internet marketer, you've found the right place. This forum is frequented by a number of very successful Internet marketers, many of whom started right here. The Warrior Forum can be an incubator for new marketers, with access to and help from senior Warriors who can provide a large wealth of Internet marketing knowledge.

However, coming into the Warrior Forum without any guidance can be as dangerous as heading off on a trek through the mountains without a trail map. It's far too easy to be dazzled and led astray.

Don't Be Dazzled & Led Astray

First, there's all the talk of big money being made in a very short time. Seeing senior Warriors talk about making over $10,000 a month – and seemingly while doing very little – can give you the false impression that Internet marketing is a route to quick & lazy riches. A deadly misconception that leaves many new Warriors frustrated and broke. What you need to understand is that senior Warriors who are generating large incomes from the Internet did not attain such a level overnight – they worked hard to build a good, solid business. It still takes work!

Second, it's easy to be led astray by all the “latest & greatest” programs and “secret tactics” that you'll see being discussed. Sure, many are great programs and tactics, but only if you consistently apply them. If you merely jump from one idea to another – giving this one a try and then jumping to that one, without ever giving one a chance to bear fruit – you'll never make money with any of them. You need to select one and stick to it, without being distracted by the next “latest & greatest”.

Most important is to use common sense here at the Warrior Forum. If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Internet marketing is just another vehicle for marketing goods and services, it's not a magic bullet to fill your bank account while you lounge around in your bathrobe.

Don't Be Discouraged

You'll also see a lot of threads started by frustrated Warriors who haven't been able to make much money online. They have come to the conclusion that the Internet dream is not for them, and they are ready to quit. Some are convinced that “gurus” have lied to them and they can't make any money with all the e-books, courses, and programs they have bought – just lots of their hard-earned cash down the drain.

The real problem is that they ran afoul of one or both of the things I discussed above. They were dazzled by all the “easy money” and thought they would soon be rich, without investing some sweat equity into building a business. They ran around gobbling up programs and WSOs, convinced that each one was the one that would “really make money”. Unfortunately, they never gave any of these enough consistent effort to ever see a profit.

You Can Create A Fantastic Income

The truth is, there are many Warriors making a very impressive income from the Internet, and living life the way they want. But none of us successful marketers did this without some work. So, don't come here expecting instant riches, apply yourself consistently to building a real online business, and you will create a very good online income for yourself.

To your success,

Kevin Riley

Hello Kevin,

That was a great post. And you can bet your bottom dollar ---the way to internet riches is like everything else in the physical world---a lot of hard work and ofcourse intelligence and common sense.

That was honest and excellent advise especially to newbies.

Thanks.

Kevin, great post.

Speaking from experience, boiling everything down, the bottom line is TAKE ACTION.

For good or bad, doing something is better than thinking or planning about doing something.

I agree that taking action is important. I would also add FOCUS. Too often people waste time chasing one "hot" thing after another. Focus on thing that you are good at doing and do that.

The other key to making money online is the same as making money offline -- create value. The beautiful thing about online marketing is that value can be created out of thin air simply by taking action and writing that post, article or ebook.

Thanks for this post Kevin, still in my noob status I appreciate what you have tried to get across to us so called newbies, I agree so many people can be misled with all the products being released & countless testimonials stating this person is better than the other etc etc.

Since coming to WF I have been enriched with a wealth of information for which my small yet busy design company has benefited from.

Once again kudo's for the letter!

Wonderful post Kevin! The only thing I would add is this: build an Internet marketing business because you love Internet marketing and you love business. If you're in this to make money fast, not only will you probably be sorely disappointed, but you'll miss out on the joy that comes from the journey. The joy that comes from overcoming the inevitable challenges, the joy of growing as a marketer and as a person, the joy of making new friends, and the joy of accomplishing things you may never have thought you'd accomplish.

Hi Kevin,

I agree 100% with you that the internet is just another medium to market product.

End of the day, this is still a real business which will requires the person to invest their time, commitment and money into growing the business.

I also agree with Doug that Focus is very important.

The basic rule:

No Action = 100% Failure

Take Action = Chances Of Success Is Higher

Kevin, Thanks for sharing

I just have to say that it was regularly visiting the Warrior Forum and seeing positive remarks that made me take action, and it's that that has brought me my first few sales.

I did buy a lot of stuff and read a lot, but coming here was how I got over the obstacles.

Hi Kevin,

I always enjoy reading your posts and this one is no different. Thanks for taking the time to impart your wisdom to fellow warriors. It is crucial to find a strategy and keep on "bulldozing through those barriers" (sage advice you have given me in the past).

Thank you (and this post should be a sticky!)

As a somewhat "new" warrior member I can say that honestly its all about taking action.

If you buy a product, FOLLOW THAT GUIDE FROM STEP 1 TO PROFIT. You may fail and lose money but it is a lesson learned.

You learn nothing going from product to product doing nothing, at least try each one all the way through.

Experience is the only reason I make money now, the mistakes I learned from have carved my path.

Great post by Kevin. This is true both for Affiliates AND for the Merchants as well. Or Just like any other business in the real/virtual world.

BTW - I have spoke to a few "super affiliates" lately, and most of them said that they did not expect huge riches when they started affiliate marketing. They started because they like to be online, understood the nuts and bolts of it, many said it was supposed to be a temporary gig, and once they stuck with it, the money started rolling, and that helped too -BUT this was not the original motive to start affiliation. (they started around 2003-5).

Great post Kevin, very positive and informative and not a "newbie bashing rant"!

I am fairly new to IM but have been in business a long time and realise that it takes time to build a business - there is no get rich quick system.

One of the things I have learnt is to do the research in an area that you are interested in and then ensure that there is a "hungry crowd" wanting what you have to offer. Then it takes a lot of work to produce something of value.

Thanks again Kevin this will help and inspire new people to the forum.

Cheers Keith

The OP is very good advice.

One can make money on the internet. One can make money selling flowers in a shop. One can make money in a job or being a taxi driver.

The internet often seems more attractive because you can "do it from home" or work in your underwear etc...

However, and this isn't meant to be negative, some people are just not cut out to be able to make money on the internet. For some people, it isn't the way. It can sometimes be too technical, complicated or just seem so overwhelming.

Yes there are tools and shortcuts and all sorts of promises, but be honest with yourself. If you aren't willing to put in the work, the long hours and often many fruitless projects, then don't beat yourself up about it and find YOUR way to make a good income.

I hate to read about folk who have spent many months and even years and haven't made at least some income. That is very sad and sometimes it's best to cut your losses, or at the very least don't put all your eggs in one basket (the internet).

The internet is just one of MANY ways to make money and support your loved ones.

If you are going to give it a shot, make sure you are really tough with yourself about your time. Otherwise, months will go by and you will look back and see you have achieved nothing.

DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN TO YOU.

Good luck either way.

Kevin - great post - wonderful information!

I have been online for awhile now and I would add that perseverance and dedication have carried me through difficult periods. There were times that giving up would have been the easy thing to do - but I was determined to hang in there and I'm glad I did. Although I am still far from reaching my ultimate goals, looking back at where I started from it is easy to see that I have come a long way.

Like others have mentioned, sticking with something you are interested in does matter. I have tried my luck at various niches and techniques but the ones that I have had the most success with are the ones that I was interested in long before I began working online.

My advice for newcomers is to do a lot of self-examination early on. Consider what is important to you and what you like to do. Then work at building a business around that criteria. You will begin with an advantage because your business will be based on things that truly matter to you.

You have to work to make money. It's the same with the Internet also.

I agree completely with the people above who also said that you have to take action. However, I wish to extend the idea a little.

Take action - not just any action, but action that is not going to waste a lot of money or time if it dioesn't work.

Look at the results you get - look at what works and repeat it. Look at what doesn't work, examine why and change it. Put new actions into action, look at new results and so on.

Kevin - many thanks for a very sensible letter!

The main problem I struggle with in all business areas is FOCUS.

It's so easy to get distracted and end up working on 10 different ideas - with the end result that none of them work out well.

I have found the Warrior forum to be very useful since I joined about a week ago - but it's definitely somewhere you can get lost in so many opportunities and advice.

One of the things I'm focusing on now is to try and set up something which I'm actually interested in. The Internet allows you to set up in business in virtually anything you like and you can also probably make money in any subject area you can think of - certainly when it comes to hobbies etc. So why promote or sell things which are of no interest whatsoever?

The most successful businesses online and offline are usually run by people who are really passionate about what they do.

Restaurants are a great example - we've all been in restaurants and received both poor and great Customer Service. It's virtually a certainty that the Restaurants that provide the best food and best Customer Service are the most successful and most profitable.

The same thing applies to business on the Internet - so I really believe that the easiest way to start a great business online is to find something you're really passionate about and learn how to make a business out of it.

Thanks again - Dave

Agree 100%.

Should be a sticky in all IM forums.

However, one of the problem is many well known and respected names in this industry
sell and promote "get rich doing nothing, no investment, instant success, guaranteed"
techniques, or use such statements in their sales letters.

So I'm not sure minds will change, as a rule seems to be "follow what successful people
do" (in this case: say to prospects no work involved, etc.)

Not sure too the same people teach their kids that they don't have to work to be
successful in life...

Kevin,

As always, a total class act. Everything you say here has been stated over and over and yet people seem to never take heed of the advice!

Offer+ Buyer= Sale....just that simple

I like how you stated that the internet is just another vehicle for distributing goods b/c that is exactly what it is. I don't know why people think this venue is so easy and will make millions over night. I don't think I ever will.

I hope everyone who reads this realizes the truth in this message. This might be the very thing that starts you off on your career online.

Best wishes to all new and "experienced" warriors alike,

Brad Spencer

Fantastic advice Kevin. When I first started I read everthing I could find on Internet Marketing. I bounced from idea to idea. Made a little here and there. Finally decided to follow your advice, I picked one area and stuck to it. Finally making a consistent income now. I can expand my focus later based on my prior experiences if I choose to!
Thanks,
Chris

Yes Kevin YES !!!!!

Perfect post .. Perfect time !!

Excellent, thankyou ...

If I may just add my little piece to this post in the hope that some newbies like myself read it and take something good from it .....

I class myself a newbie, I have tried to make money online for a couple of years, bought everything... failed badly.... lost a lot of cash ( A LOT !! )

Then about 8 months ago I paid for a good mentor.... Now .. ?

Ive made over $10,000 online ... Have a successful blog, have a good email list ..and just recently handed in my notice of resignation at my job to go full time online !!!

Now next month I have my first major launch where I will coach others to the level I am at now !

So I had to fail for a long time to get here now !!! I could have quit ... I could of just drifted into what some may call 'reality' and tried to work my way through a corporate career... In fact I think it may have been easier ... IN THE SHORT TERM !!

But what would you do if you knew at the end of your efforts you could be your own boss and become a full time internet marketer ??

Well I guess it all depends on how much you want that... Me I want it so bad so that is what I have work damn hard for.

As a total newbie I think a hard thing to over come is the realisation that you really can make money online ( And a lot of it ! )

I mean you always read about... Every guru's sales page shows you how much they make ... BIG BUCKS huh ?! Sure they do, so much so that you dont know whats real and whats trash !!

I can tell you this from coming this far... A lot of the big name marketers you know about really do make the money they show you .. BUT

It DID NOT start this way !! And sorry but it WILL NOT start this way for you either

You have to learn the system, work the system, and then and only then at the end of the tunnel you will begin to make money ... Slowly at first but just keep reapplying the system and it will grow !

I'll say this favourite quote again for you from my mentor ....

" Its not a get rich quick scheme ... It's a get rich forever system"

Hope that helps you, you really can do this !! Just dont expect it to be easy !!

You have to answer 1 question and YOU have to answer it in total honesty to yourself ...

Do you want this ?

Yes / No

Yes - Well great, it can be done !! Focus on learning the correct way to do things and just keep pushing forwards. You WILL have failures, everyone does ... Just learn from them and keep going forwards !

No - Well you have been honest with yourself. If you are sure then give it up or maybe just dont approach it for a career. Maybe learn it real slow as a hobbie, you never know you may change your mind and want to really go for it.

Best wishes

Dean

Dear New Warrior

If you've come here to become an Internet marketer, you've found the right place. This forum is frequented by a number of very successful Internet marketers, many of whom started right here. The Warrior Forum can be an incubator for new marketers, with access to and help from senior Warriors who can provide a large wealth of Internet marketing knowledge.
Kevin, thank you, sincerely. Your letter makes such good sense and that is what I for one have to hold onto, is common sense. Sticking to one thing is hard when there are all these other things coming at you. Like trying to pick out the best candy-bar I'm just starting out but luckily, I saw what I was doing. I was not doing "anything" because I was too busy admiring all the cool ways to make the money. I had to decide and now, I am going to stick to it. I've been working just about 1 month, the article marketing and content for my homepage, backlinks. That is all I can do and still remain sane. If that method doesn't work(but I know it will)I will add something more to help it fly!

Thanks again for the post and I hope lots read it. I know I want that instant gratification and anything that is going to last will take hard work and paying attention to those that have gone before me

Two remarks from a newbie:

1. Thanks to Kevin for the very useful, elegantly written article!
2. "Veterans", please, show some good example while condescending to us... and do NOT quote a long article when you are posting a one-liner.

In the first half of the year we are supposed to work for the taxman. I think that's a mistake.
Help me to get rid of the taxman ASAP - thanks! (You, too, should make less mistakes!)

Hello,

When you are into IM think of it as a real business and it will grow into a real business and if you think of it as a hobby then it will remain a hobby. The choice is yours.

If you choose the former then be prepared for the long haul.

You will face problems and difficulties but you will find the necessary inner strength to surmount all odds.

Remember--"Great things are done when men and mountains meet.It is not done by jostling in the streets".

I met Kevin in Tokyo this Jan and he's the real deal - a nail gun wielding maniac who strikes terror in hamster hearts nationwide...

Actually, he's been up real rough and close with those kinda "toys" while running a construction business down in the wilds of Osaka (sorry Kevin, couldn't resist).

Hearing some stories about his life before IM taught me a lot about the guy - savvy enough to run a tough business as a foreigner in Japan, where the only (legal) way to succeed is to work long and hard. Yes, smart too but he's definitely no stranger to graft.

And that shows in the success he's built over time with the online Hamster emporium ;-)

Anyway - screw that altogether. Screw this get rich quick stuff. I mean, who wants to make money really, really fast? Financial planners can't do it, so they say it can't be done, so of course that means it doesn't work, right? Yeahh! Get rich slow, that's what I'm talking about. I'm gonna release a WSO real soon: "how to get rich... in 25 years." Any takers?
People wouldn't buy it. Good idea but everyone has the now mentality. Once you break away from that you will be a success.

As usual sound sense from Kevin. If you are a newbie make sure that you grab his Success Manifesto 2011.

What sets Internet Marketing apart from other businesses is that you can start with nothing and still build a huge business.

But like any other business it takes time and commitment, and most importantly of all good guidance.

Kevin really is one of the good guys! Thank you for your stream of good advice.

Kevin,

Thank you for a wonderful post. One that should be read by every newbie. It was way back in 2004 that I first discovered Internet Marketing, but not until 2007 did I find out about and join the Warrior Forum.

I knew that money could be made, but had no idea how. So started years of trying first one thing then another. I spent thousands that I could ill afford, but my love affair with the internet was total.

Can one be an Internet Marketing addict?

Yes! That is a big danger for many of us.

I have been scammed several times. The worst one was by a warrior. Fortunately, I was "rescued" by yet another warrior, but not before I had lost a large amount of cash.

My rescuer guided me towards the training and support that Kevin provides. I completed his Product Creation Course and wrote a really good guide in a specialized niche - unfortunately the sales letter is a disaster - I have a lot of work to do on that score...lol. Sales letters are definitely not my forte.

I have also followed up with his Traffic Creation Course and most recently with his Success Manifesto 2011.

Kevin has pretty much straightened out my mind. I now know and understand what it is that I need to do. I am creating a long term business.

Have I made money? No!

Will I make money? Yes!

It will take time and dedication - but Kevin as my unwitting mentor has shown me exactly what I need to do. The most important rule to my mind is to close my eyes and ears to all the sales hype out there.

Although I haven't reached the light at the end of the tunnel, I can see it clearly and as long as I refuse to allow myself to be distracted, I will get there sooner rather than later. It has taken me a long time stumbling around in the dark to reach this stage - but at last I know that I will make it.

Darn! I just have to get a handle on the sales and marketing stuff - my biggest problem at the moment.

Thanks for everything Kevin

Sandy

The recurring theme includes two 4-letter words: "hard", and "work." But that doesn't have to be a bad problem, if you know that IM is what you really & truly want to do.

Thanks, Kevin, for the "tough love".

Good point. I only think of it as "work". I've worked in construction, on a railway signals construction crew, on haying crews (in my early teens), and on a deep sea dragger (for 3 hellish weeks), so I find Internet marketing the easiest work I've ever done, but YES it will not come from pushing buttons and dreaming.
