3 Years Before the Big IM Breakthrough - What was it?

Focus, motivation and persistence are words you hear a lot about when it comes to self improvement and building a business.

But talk is cheap!

I prefer the common sense approach to all this - its really comes down to making yourself do whatever you need to do. i.e ACTION (another word you are probably sick of hearing)

All this stuff about positive thinking and the rest of it, may well have some merit - but for me I see it as being quite simple...

Your focus, motivation, persistence and action all needs to be pointing at the right thing. We usually know what that is, but fail to do what we deep down know to be the right thing, or have been told is the right thing to do.

I was not focused on one project, was not taking the right action, was getting distracted by email, was doing all sorts of other things I shouldn't when I justified doing the wrong thing as if it were the right thing. That's why it took me so long to get my business off the ground.

The big breakthrough for me was actually being persuaded to believe the things you are often told but don't do are right.

For example...
- When enough successful entrepreneurs told me that trying to do lots of projects will hold me back, I eventually listened, and became convinced.

- When I worked closely with successful internet businesses and saw what they were doing actually worked, and how it works, my motivation sky-rocketed when I realized it is possible for anyone to build a big online business if they are committed and have the right mindset.

- Even more recently it finally sunk in that checking my email everyday (and multiple times throughout the day) was a complete waste of time. I always kind of knew this, but eventually it sunk in just how much of my life it was wasting and how much my business was suffering because I was allowing email to break my concentration and suck up my time. I am now convinced that checking my email everyday makes my life worse, so even if its a nice quick distraction from some difficult work I don't want to do, I now will rarely check my email.

I think the key to becoming convinced about what you should actually do is surrounding yourself with positive influence. Chatting in forums like this are okay, but there's a lot of negative influence here too.

You want to surround learn from very successful people and listen to what they have to say. Reading their books and courses is a great start.

    Hi Chris,

    Good pointers here.

As you note maintaining a positive environment breeds success because being around positive types colors your thoughts positive.

That might well be true, although I'm generally not big on the whole positive thinking thing, I just like to be realistic.

My main thing is that being surrounded by people who are at where you want to be you will pick up on the right way to do things, and actually realize what your bad habits might be that are holding you back. It's easy to justify bad habits, or even claim they are good habits, but when enough people you respect tell you otherwise you'll start to think differently.

Great thoughts to share man! Here are mine:

Specific Goal + Congruent thoughts + Congruent Actions + Persistence = Result

Specific Goal + Congruent Result = Success

I like simple too! Is this easy enough?

Chris (and Ryan), I always love what you guys have to say.

    But...

    Talk is not cheap.

You put your ladder up against the correct wall, and you are achieving. That (in my humble opinion) is what the newbies need to hear about.

You just reminded me of something...

There was a study that showed that when you tell your friends/peers your goals you are less likely to do them, the theory being that just saying them gives a feeling of accomplishment along with any recognition you might get from people you tell it to, which in turn lowers motivation as you've received some reward by just saying it. Heard that in a TED Talks.

In my experience with people I've met and known throughout my life those that talk a lot about what they are going to do rarely do it or follow through, and those that quietly get on with it achieve a lot more, and if they share what they are up to its what they've done, not what they are going to do.

I'm sure there's plenty of exceptions, but that's just how I've seen things.

One of the main problems is that we give excuses to ourselves: now it's not the right time, I don't have enough money, I don't have enough time, I am not good at this, I still need to learn more, I need to keep looking until I find the 'golden' system to succeed....
I started being successful when I became aware of my self-imposed excuses and took them away!
Replace those excuses with: Now it's the best time to do it, I have enough time (even if it's little time, it's still better than nothing), I already have all the information I need (and I can continue learning while I am making money), I can do it....
In my experience and in my work as a therapist, repetition is the key: repeat those new ideas over and over again throughout the day, believe them, feel them, make them yours and visualize yourself as you were already the proactive person you want to become.
You can reprogram your mind in as little as one month.
As in everything else you need to be very persistent but the rewards are awesome!
