LOL and this illuminates something in the sales process that I include for my copywriting clients:

Making sure the number of revision "rounds" is limited. Usually to three. That way they cannot include their high school guidance counselor, favorite pet or extinct dinosaur into the conversation.

YOU are the design expert. Being Tough with your client doesn't mean you have to be a jerk, but you do have to stand up and place limitations on their actions before you begin. After all, they hired you.

After you hand it over to them, it's theirs and they can make a mess of it if they want to. But keep a copy of your original around in case they start telling others what a lousy job you did.

      Excellent!

Now when people ask me why I won't offer web design in any way shape or form, I can direct them to this thread!

      Thanks!

        Hi there Mr Miller,

Which kind of services do you offer? I was thinking about offering website design but I've changed my mind after a picky client LOL.

This. As a designer I get this a lot. I give my clients 3 rounds of revisions max unless they pay for more. And the terms of those revisions are limited. If they ask for major changes my favorite line is "Okay, we can do that, but that is outside the scope of what we agreed upon in your original contract, so I will have to bill you at $50 an hour, and I'll need an additional $X to get started on these additional changes, cool?" They usually backdown from the additional costs. Every now and then you'll get a ringer who will let the meter run.

ROTFLMAO!!! This has got to be the best illustration of what we do for a living and when it all goes crazy... Funny I was just thinking about how many clients I've had to fire for crap like this, just this morning, and for a moment I felt bad, just for a moment, after that I felt on top of the world, and then I saw this cartoon and it simply made my day. Thanks!

I love the dog part cracked me up - this is why I outsource I would go insane if I had to do what my employees have to do, but I should limit the amount of revisions.

I had this type of thing happen a few times with direct mail pieces. The
alternatives they came up with was mind-numbing.

One told me he 'didn't feel comfy' with my letter. I guess he knew best
as he would send flyers and get zero response. I damn near had to
part the sea and turn water to wine for him to begrudgingly agree.

Two months later he had $98,000 in sales... he now calls me Jesus

This is awesome, My very first web design client was just like this. I have a printed copy of this as a poster .... I need to get it framed and put on the wall.

I have this poster. I have always liked it!

I also like the one about "Why it is better you do not know anything about computers." I look at it every time some one asks me for computer help.

After one of our first clients pretty much took us through this exact process (down to asking his relatives for input and always asking us to make the design "pop" more), we changed our entire process and hung this poster on the office wall!
