The best place to learn SEO

Everywhere I go to try to learn about SEO I end up being sold something. I don't mind paying for real value, but I'm never sure what is real value and what's affiliate marketing.

There are many of these internet marketing "universities" you know the ones that most active... including the one right here in this forum. Anyone who has a blog and a podcast now has a membership site and they are selling their "top SEO secrets" about the very latest ways of manipulating google search.

All I want to do is learn how to rank a special needs school in my community (local search) for parents with autistic kids to help them find some really valuable info on a website which is tucked away in dark Africa but bursting with incredible information. This info is beneficial globally too. How do I help this school get found. Apparently back-links are the thing, so what's the trick to back-linking? My content is great... but nobody knows about it.

How can I help Mr Parker, a retired sculptor with a wealth of knowledge about sculpture casting. He wants to show the world his work and a video on the process he has spent 70 years mastering. His website is up but he doesn't appear in the top 10 for any of the keywords I've targeted.

I really don't want to sell them anything, I genuinely want to help these people. Most of the work I have done for them is free, I've built a website in Wordpress, i've written content for them, published articles and now I want their sites to be found on Google. How do I find a checkbox with all the things to check for keyword density, headers, tags etc.

Can anyone help me with this, without trying to sell me something that I'm just never going to justify spending money on? If I do decide to spend some money to learn, how can I be sure I know the information is relevant and trustworthy?

How did you learn? I'm sure everyone in this forum didn't get where they are by spending a fortune on a War Room membership?

You know what . . . SEO is not worth spending a lot of time on.

You can learn everything you need to know about it without buying a thing right here on the Warrior Forum.

Have you taken the time to view what's in the SEO section of the Warrior Forum?

I'm not saying you shouldn't optimize your web site using basic principles. But to undertake a full blown study of SEO is a waste of time IMO. You shouldn't be relying on the search engines for anything.

Between the section mentioned above, the War Room, and this main discussion forum, you have all the resources you need to optimize your properties . . . and without buying any more questionable SEO products.

    The best to you,

    Steve

I disagree with most of that.

The whole point of Google is generating traffic, nothing wrong with tapping into any relevant traffic source to generate sales/traffic.

Also, the War Room is usually people trying to generate traffic for selling products.

MOZ was one of the first websites I frequented when I started learning SEO. The open spirit of the community combined with the consistent publication of thorough educational content makes this one of the first places I send those looking to learn more about SEO.

Have you tried SEO for Bing and Yahoo? Both have the same searching algorithm but its older than Google, less competitive and less time consuming to manage. Like for instance, URLs are more important for Bing searches than it is for Google searches. Bing is also gaining importance with a 30% market share and rising.

Same rules apply though - no duplicate content, solid backlinks
