SEO Question - Keyword in URL

If I have the domain: blue-widgets.com and my goal is to sell blue-widgets, which is best:

1. Keyword rich "blue-widget" text on home page: blue-widgets.com
2. Keyword rich "blue-widget" text on the page: blue-widgets.com/blue-widgets... and then just use the home page as a welcome page with some nice photos, but not much else on it.

Thanks,
Jimmy

Since your domain name is "blue-widgets" and you want to target "blue widgets" it will be much better that you use the home page.

Google expects you to get many links to your homepage with your brand name in it. It's part of their algorithm that favors brands. Then, use your inner pages to target keywords related to blue widgets so that you come off as an authority site in the blue widget niche.

So the overall site structure and targets would look like this:

    blue-widgets.com
    blue-widgets.com/buy-blue-widgets
    blue-widgets.com/cheap-blue-widgets
    blue-widgets.com/blue-widget-reviews

    Hope that helps.

I guess maybe I thought my BEST content should go on:
blue-widgets.com/blue-widgets because of that double keyword in the URL.

The homepage should do both - welcome with lots of content but some keywords in there

Just curious, is your example from an eBook? The example of "blue widgets" sounds awfully familiar.

No I just remember seeing blue-widgets as an example a lot... red, green too.

I wish I had that domain. probably has a lot of backlinks to it...

Use the Index page as a collection of links too all your related categories.

    Green = Index page
    Orange = Category page
Yellow = Internal category supporting page

Each orange box represents a new keyword/phrase that you want to rank for in the SERPs.

    This thread might help?

      Yucon,

Just to clarify- you said in the linked post:

"You want the green landing page to act as an authority buffer between silo supporting pages & the Index page. This will help later on (see double/triple SERP listings below). The goal is to rank the green landing pages for each individual keyword, it doesn't matter If the Index page ranks or not, chances are it will still rank for a variety of themed keywords."

I have 5 keywords for now. My best keyword phrase will be one of those 5
In your example, it will be a green landing page.

My index page is of lower importance... This is good for me because my front page can just have "some" content, but link to these green important keyword rich pages.

Is that about right? Am I on the right track?

      Thanks for your help!

If you're using wordpress then you should do keyword rich "blue widgets" (the "s" does matter) and I would use it on a post which is stuck to the home page. If it's not wordpress, then I would use the keyword on both the homepage and on inner pages.

      Thanks Mosa!

Yes, I'm on Wordpress which doesn't have the most seo friendly home page anyway. So, I will go with this advice.

I will use a subpage with keyword in url and link from the home page.

      Thanks you very much!

You should only use your homepage, the other pages you can try to convert for more keywords (any related ones to your main keyword!)

I've always had the best success with treating the homepage as a portal to the subpages, like so:

    Main Page Question:

    - subpage answer 1
    - subpage answer 2, etc.

It's more intuitive for the visitor, so I think it helps ranking. I rarely fill my main page with a ton of content, but rather make it as user-friendly as possible so my visitors quickly click through to a deeper page.

My wordpress theme only allows for a slider and a couple of snippets of text anyway.... makes sense!

Well you should target the keywords those got highest searches and less competition.

You don't need to create inner page if you already have domain. Your domain will rank well on search engine, because you already have the keywords in domain. What ever content you add on home page. Just make sure you have added your targeted keyword 2-3 times in the content. The keyword density will help you to crawl your website well.

I would suggest you put your primary keyword in the home page.

Home page will be better for your successful campaign, because inner pages have less importance then home pages and keyword in domain is plus point for your website.

In my Opinion, your strategy would be,

    http://www.blue-widget.com/blue-widget.html

    OnPage: Blue Widget | Widget

then you add some content about blue widget and place your keyword in your content but remember the keyword density..

You must target the keyword on homepage, as it is completely similar with domain name
