I always follow the rule "Don't put all eggs in one basket especially Google's basket". Google will keep improving its algorithm to hit crap hat SEO and do collateral damage with legitimate sites as well. So I continuously find new market places, Niche forms, Blogs Shopping Search Engines to get referral traffic. This will help me to cut short the reliance on Google and guess what when we hit by algo update, we still got reasonable traffic and sales to stay in market.

Just keep in mind "make your self real" instead of "try to be a real". Don't overdo SEO,Think like a Marketer and spend time in RCS to generate business not only from Internet but also from offline means.

Google+ will be even more aggressively pushed by Google
Naturally greater importance of author rank within the SERPs
Even more Panda and Penguin rollouts
Lexical co-occurrence will become more important than anchor text
Better uptake from Google of schema.org structured data

Apart from all the typical updates and obvious pushing of Google+, I really hope that Google make a significant investment in cleaning up their spam. The Australian SERPs are way behind the US and UK, check out 'life insurance'.

    Hi leon agathe!

You have some good assumptions there and I think you are in the right track when it comes to increasing algorithm strength of Google.

It is true that Google is becoming wiser and it is starting to track down spun content and give it a penalty. The algorithm is also starting to catch up with the link wheel techniques conducted by many seo specialists.

For the year 2013, Google's campaign for original content will become stronger and more aggressive. With their Google+ site, the search engine is also taking a big step through the power of social media.

Google will release some more updates and will penalize the sites with bad backlinks and duplicate content. Google is no doubt becoming wiser and wiser.

Social proof is going to become big. I love what LinkedIn is doing to show you who the best people to employ are.

Google are going to trip up on search. Will 2013 be their HotBot/AltaVista moment? They're so obsessed with spam that they've chucked the baby out with the bathwater. I don't know about you, but the searches I've done recently have shown some pathetically poor results. At some point everyone will realise that Google have lost their way on search.

There's only one thing I can be sure of: there will be a flood of threads saying SEO is dead after every Google update occurs.

I think search engines will do what they do: continue to get smarter. They'll take into consideration author rank, definitely agree on rich snippets, but I doubt they'll pull away from G+ - the data is too much for them to ignore. I think we'll see G+ grow, actually.

I think SEOs will continue to talk about: content marketing, snippets, brands, big data, negative SEO, disavowing links, guest posting, author rank, citations.

The biggest thing I see changing now is that SEO is becoming a part of a bigger thing, call it "digital marketing" 2013? I dunno. People are starting to understand you need more than SEO or more than Facebook ... so we put social, SEO, email marketing, ppc - all into one bubble and do "that" for our clients.

No shock, I also think we'll see video & multimedia use grow. Mobile, tablets, phone searches, SoLoMo, etc. I think we'll see the beginning of the end of some spam as it stops working. Blog comment spam, forum profile spam, article spam - hopefully those 3 first.

These are the things we're starting to prepare for here. I'm interested in what others think will change and what will grow.
