Backlinking Dillema! - Has this Happened to You?

I am a big fan of Angela's WSO -- Backlinking packets

But while they are working their magic, I have encountered an issue. Many times the sites I am getting backlinks ranking higher than my site and actually push my site down on the Google results page.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I had a site that went to the top of Google after my first day backlinking, then after the 3rd day, no less than 8 of my backlinks were in front of my site, bumping me to page 2.

This has happened to me several times...can backlinking work too well? Who has some advice or experience to share? (Angela?)

My first though is that I am going to try and backlink from lower PR sites so they don't carry so much more weight than the sites I am trying to get noticed by Google. Does that seem like a sound strategy?

I looked at it briefly. What is the quality of the links you are receiving?
What would be an example link?

Hi Dvduval, thanks for the reply.

These are sites that are from Angelas packets, which generally are place where you can post comments to posts or articles, and in some cases personal blog entries from Steve Aylor's WSO, which are sites that allow you to create content if you join their community.

I found some sites on my own with a high PR that are of a similar nature to the packet sites, and it happened to me there to.

The sites I am promoting are fairly young, but I am working diligently to put unique content on a fairly regular basis.

All I can say is ranking won't be the same for a web site all the time. It goes up and down over a period of time. Give it some more time and see.

The interesting thing was with one of my sites, after a period of time, my site climbed right back to #2 after I added more content, but the links I created are still right behind me.

It seems like their is a lot of experimentation in store for me.

I was asking because sometimes when links are for sale, you often see sites that have a TON of unrelated links that were put there because they were sold, but not because it made any sense to put them there. When you start getting tons of links on a site that are unrelated, the quality is no longer good. And when a large number of links to the site you are promoting are of low quality, there is some reason to believe the google "trust rank" can go down, and you can actually get lower in the results.

A couple of examples of low quality link program's would be Digital Point's Coop program and the Link Vault. These programs are no longer popular like they used to be. I tried them a long time ago, and it hurt a couple of my sites for a couple of years, and I finally got good rankings again, but it took a long time to recover.

I am not suggesting these programs you are using are bad, but I am telling you to use some caution and make sure you are getting quality here.

      Hi Guys,

I am not using any program per se, I am going to websites and creating content that has contextual anchor text embedded in it.

The interesting thing is that I have seen this occur with links I created at the beginning before I realized contextual anchor links are (Theoretically) superior.

Having said that, when I have hauled off and written some serious external linked content, it has risen to #1 in less than 12 hours time, bumping my site down.

I am wondering if this is actually beneficial to my site in the long run.

Like I wrote before, I guess I have a lot more experimenting to do. I think I will try backlinking some of my well aged sites.

Is there empirical data you can link to that supports this - or is it an anecdotal theory?

Cuz that doesnt sound like what happened to ooohahh's sites to me at all.

Sounded like he was backlinking some of his articles and they are on much higher PR and much better backlinked sites than his main site. Hence, his articles or other content on high pr sites ranked higher.

Ive had that happen too ooooh ahhhh.

Angela answered it best before I got here. Ive been rockin my main site's back links 2:1 ratio over my eza articles for just that reason. I dont want them to rank higher than my main URL :-)

Its a test - not a proven theory - so do your thing your way.

Funny thing - a goofy random blog post from one of my backlink goldmine sites outranked my main site for an obscure keyword phrase - I laughed hard as I took a screen cap for posterity.

Ken - I'm wondering if possibly your OWN page is not well optimized with respect to ON PAGE optimization. If that is the case, I can see your backlink pages (from Angela's packet) ranking higher.

If you are going to setup links for a keyword, make sure those keywords show up in the first few lines of your page.

If you have a page about "widgets", and you want to rank for "blue widgets", then write a specific page (landing page) about "blue widgets", use that keyword in the URL, Headline, and first sentence of paragraph text. THEN, use the backlinks to point to the new landing page. That is WAY more effective.

Actually, what is happening is that the sites where Ken's link is stored have SUCH High Page Rank that when he puts his anchor text on the site, that can push that site's page way high in Google for that keyword. This is due to the fact that the site has MANY backlinks of its own and has such High Page Rank. I have had the same thing happen, myself.

However, these High Page Rank sites are the ones that are NOT optimized for the keyword, so as Ken continues with his link campaign, he will take a higher spot, pushing those pages down.

      Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply, but I think Angela is right. My sites are keyword optimized for URL, metatags, and content. I've been hitting page 1-2 pretty quickly, but I have been using Angela's packets to try and dislodge or stay on top of the more established sites that have some stickiness that I assume is due to age or more content.

Angela's packets are almost too powerful if that is possible! I am going to give this month's packets a try on some much tougher comp!

I completely agree with you, Angela. Sometimes it really depends on the on the quality of sites you are linking with. Sites with high PR boost your site higher because Google gives more credit with those sites they think has an authority.

This really shows the power of Angela's links.

As you keep getting the links, your own authority will soon outrank the sites where you placed the links.

And, yup, on-site SEO has to be taken care of of course.

This is the best testimonial I've seen so far on the power of the Angelalinks (and there has been aplenty)

Yes, they work well, but you have to go out there and do it. I am trying to promote about 30 of my best sites and it is a little tedious, I must say!

Those backlinks, I believe can work wonders for a website, I've been using Angela's back links for about a month and even though I was on the first page I really wanted to knock out that guy that has the first spot, I have moved one spot up- and now I'm listed at number five for the keyword that I'm working on since purchasing the backlinks package, it seems like I may not get that top spot.

Has anybody had any experince beating a well establised site for the number spot with Angeals backlinks package?

The keyword Angela has 76 million competing sites broad search. I got a pretty good spot before I had even realized it, but there is one Angela who has a MySpace profile that apparently has thousands of backlinks. That site was VERY hard to beat, but I finally did it (then in the last "Google Dance" I was behind her again, but came back up). Those types of sites simply take a bit longer than other sites to beat out.

        Angela's list is the schiznit.

If your rank blows, it's not about your backlinks. With that confidence in mind, look at your site. Are you doing everything you can to optimize? Are you sending mixed signals to The G?

        Look for the light.

Don't sweat this. The only reason this is happening is because your money site is VERY WEAK. It'll get stronger over time, just keep building more links.

Thanks for the encouragement. Basically the sites I am bumping up with backlinks are getting bumped back by my backlinks.

I am now working out a moderation linking system for my brand new sites -- enough for them to get noticed, not so much that my backlinks own page 1, and also adding some lower PR backlinks to my strategy.

What's even funnier is when you might use a funny screen name on one of these sites. My Physical Therapist's (I have an old ankle injury) name is Joe, so I used the screen name "JoeBlow8694" on many of the sites for his backlinks. Now "JoeBlow8694" comes up under his keyword...and for a time, some of those were ABOVE his site on the index. Thankfully, he didn't ask me about that.
