Hi

I am moving over a large website to a new design. I would like some advice on what to look out for to ensure that no seo value is lost and what could harm a successful move-over?

  • Hi there,

As long as you keep the content relevant and keep your on page and off page SEO consistent with what Google is looking for (good content, strong backlinks etc) you should be fine.

While upgrading new design.. You should concentrate and basic setup of your site. The permanent setups like permalink, title tag h1 h2 tag may changed based on the theme that may affect seo.

If you changed the theme of your website.. you could concentrate more in seo.. else only you will make redesign with the same theme means just ensure the url in the navigation.. because dropdown navigation urls make some problems while redesign same theme ..

also check permanent settings that affect seo..

Is your website done in php? I know you can usually have a new template integrated into your old site. Someone that is good in coding can just edit the Header, foot, and css file. Then you have table layouts for your indivisual pages, but that will depend on your current design and the design you are trying to change it to.

I concur with o.w.b up there, as long as you are solid both off and on site, you should not have any worries about the change over. Perhaps a post update when the changeover is done for reivew?

Give a 301 redirect for all the old pages, give meta tags for the pages and create webmaster tools account in all three main search engines. Create and submit the sitemap files in these tools in order to get all the pages indexed.

Try to keep the same filenames for your content so that the backlinks still point somewhere. If you cannot do this make sure you set up a 301 redirect on all those old pages so that search engines and visitors alike will know where the content has moved to.
