What should I monitor in Analytics when I launch my new design?

As I am about to launch the new website for my employer, I would like to be able to show him in a month or two how much better the new site is performing than the previous, because I basically had to beg him to be able to redesign it.

So what all should I monitor in Google Analytics and how should I go about it? Spreadsheet? Just screenshots of our analytics?

    Hi,

In order to show that the site is performing better, you need to define what "better" is.

More traffic? Lower bounce rate? Better click through rate? More signups? More sales?

Whatever it is that you define, you can use screenshots of the analytics to show. I also suggest that you setup a few goals as they can give a clear view of what is happening on the site.

      Hi,
If you can install GA before the re-design, you will be able to compare 'before and after' data using the GA 'compare to past' setting (it's a checkbox in the area where you set the date-range).
You can show improvements (hopefully!) using screenshots of that.

The actual metrics that would be best for you to monitor will be those most closely linked to the actual goal of this particular site.
As mgreener said above - "you need to define what "better" is".

Most business sites are there to earn more cash for their owners.
Whichever metrics align best with that goal are the metrics to track...

I am most interested in 'Bounce and 'Time on page' as these show how engaging/interesting my content is to my visitors.
For you, that might be different...

Best Wishes and good luck with the redesign...

Bounce Rate and Time on Site are my best answers. low bounce rate will show that the design is working to keep them on the site and the Time on Site will show that your visitors are engaged with your content. New Visits could also help.

I thank all of you for your input.

Right now our bounce rate is something like 32%, the average time on site is 4:05 and all of our search engine traffic is from people searching specifically for our business.

What is GA? For the record, I'm not building this site on Wordpress, in case it's a Wordpress plugin.
