Is YouTube considered "Social Media?"

Hi all,

This is directly related to a CPA network that I just joined.

I won't bore you with long-winded details, but it ultimately comes down to being denied the ability to promote several offers through YouTube. The offers all state that Social Media is an accepted form of traffic.

What is the consensus here on YouTube being considered Social Media? As far as I know, it is. Yes? No?

YouTube is considered social media it's just different than your standard Facebook or social sharing site. It's more content based.

If you're using YouTube to promote offers then it falls under the 'social' category. However, it is possible that some offers will specifically say you aren't allowed to use YouTube. In that case there's not much you can do as you'll have to follow the terms and conditions.

Thank you for the insight. I wanted to make sure I wasn't losing my mind.

I don't mind following the terms, it's just that the offers don't clearly say you can't use YouTube. I'd prefer that be stated upfront, and I will make a suggestion to the network.

Yeah fair enough, it can be tricky sometimes. Always just ask your AM if you are unsure.

No problem. Glad I could provide some clarification.

Promoting on YouTube is really about creativity and humoring the masses. You have to create something unique yet understandable.

Is it Social Media? It's a Video Sharing platform and search engine unto itself. Videos are more easily ranked.

All depends on the business type or product/service promoted.

  • Hey guys I consider YouTube to fall under the Search category personally. I mean you can create a video, but so are 10,000+ other people/day. Video SEO is pretty much mandatory to stand out.

    Do you agree?

In most cases yes, however you can always reach out to your AM to confirm as some networks may or may not consider it social media.. when in doubt, always check with your am!

I contacted my affiliate manager for some clarification, and according to them, they do not consider YouTube traffic to be social media for traffic purposes. I can use YouTube however, if the offers involve incentives.

Personally, it doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. On top of that, I see the same offers on YouTube from other marketers.

I'm going to contact some other networks and ask them what they think using the exact same offers. I'll be back when I get some answers.
