More keywords results in bad adwords account performance!

I have several adwords accounts, some in MCC and some without that I manage for myself and my clients. Also the limit of 25 campaigns and 2000 adgroups is lifted in my case.

Over several months of testing this is what I have discovered - and maybe others can provide their feedback:

In accounts where I uploaded 100's to 1000's of keywords per campaign vs accounts where I limited 20-50 keywords per campaign - the latter performed much better (I got lower QS and thus CPC).

Now keep in mind, I create 1 adgroup per kw, thus the first account has that many adgroups whereas the second account has limited and very focused adgroups/keywords.

Somehow I feel Google penalizes accounts that are non-focused and treating adwords as a testing ground (even though they profit more) compared to very focused and limited adgroup accounts.

    Are you saying that a campaign with few tight of adgroups is preferred ofer a campaign with more broadly related adgroups?

    An example would be a campaign with say an adgroup about "weight loss" and an adgroup about "fitness" for the same product.

    This would be worse than creating two campaigns for each adgroup "theme"?

    Also, in which way did they perform better. Did they get more impressions or a better QS ... ?

    Not really. Rather purely on the merit of more data (more keywords/adgroups) compared to less data i loaded into each account.

    So it merits my total Accounts history leading to a lower cpc for my 2nd account. Same as a account having a good history of several month vs a brand new adwords account (the latter will pay higher cpc assuming everything else remains the same - exact adcopy, campaign setting, destination url, & keywords).

    Yep would agree with this. Google seems to hate anything that clogs up the system.

    It's true. The more focused your campaign, the more they will love you. If you can get your ctr to double digits and keep it there, (per keyword and per the whole campaign), they'll REALLY love you. If you dump in a full accounts worth of keywords and let it fly, odds are it will fail. You're getting too many impressions and not enough clicks in the beginning, so you start off with a negative mark on your account from the get go.

    A suggestion is have a test account where you can find good keywords with high ctr, then move anything good to your good account and only keep good stuff in the good account.

    Yes that's a good strategy PPC-Coach - having one account just for testing and here you can have upload adgroups/kw to see which will perform and the move it to your good account.

    The only thing is - if you stop the test account and then move it to good a/c your CTR will again need to start from scratch, there is no way porting this
