What's a good way to find forums or blogs in a particular niche?
Is there a way to do that with one of the google tools, or are there better ways of finding out?

That's exact what I do aswell. Its works great because sometimes you'll get a list of the most popular ones in that particular niche. Its very simple and only takes a matter of seconds. I then make an excel spreadsheet of all the blogs/forums and my activity on each of them in order to keep track of things.

  Yep - both of those ways work great. Once you find a few sites in a niche - whether they are forums or blogs - it makes it easier to find others.
  
  You see people on the niche blogs especially talking about the different forums they frequent.
  
  Sometimes I'll also type in "top ten keyword blogs" and other list type keywords to see if anyone has already made a post about it.

Try google stuff like KEYWORD FORUM or KEYWORD MESSAGE BOARD.

If you happen to own Market Samurai for your keyword research, then you just drop down into the promotion module, select the kind of sites you are looking for, whether they are forums or bulletin boards, and it searches for sites based upon the keywords you are working with.

It works extremely well.

It will give you feedback on whether they are no-follow links, the Google PageRank, and even some stats on their links.

Just type in the "keyword"

and then sort it by "Discussions" or "Blogs" on the left hand side
