Quick noob questions about domain names!

Hey guys,

I have tried to search for these answers but i cant see them google nor this forum and they will only take 2minutes to answer so i thought i'd post here!

Here goes:
  • Im a little confused on the aspect of registering a domain name. So i've bought my domain name, does this mean its now registered or do i have to pay another fee to do that? Or does the first fee of buying my domain include registering it?
  • I've heard of some companys registering your domain in their name without you realising it, how do i best avoid this?
  • Godaddy will be charging me £7 a year to register my domain, at the end of these 2 years could they ramp up the price? Does this often happen?
  • Is there a way of purchasing my domain forever?
Godaddy has a automatic renewal option so i dont want to click it and find they may ramp up the price after the 2 years is over. Say your website gets massive and ur domain is close to expiring, they may see ur getting thousands of visitors a month and suddenly charge you alot lot more! Which is why i was wondering are they allowed to do this and could i buy it forever.

Thats all i could think of at the moment, if i remember more i'll be sure to post!

Thanks guys

    Hi Shaun,

By paying that fee, you are registering the name. No other charge.

Godaddy could change the charges for domain registration, but it is unlikely that they would change it only for your site. They might raise prices across the board.

I don't think you can buy it for good. Auto-renewal is nice because it ensures you don't lose your domain, but it is possible you would get charged more at the next renewal.

On a side note, I personally do not like godaddy. You might consider another registrar in the future to avoid a flood of ads in your inbox. Namecheap is good. Probably others as well, but I only use namecheap when possible.

        Hey Shaun,

Honestly, I only have experience with namecheap and godaddy. I did have a domain at 1and1.com, and they were ok, but I know others have had problems.

Namecheap does have a coupon right now - BACKTOREALITY. Use it at checkout for a little bit off.

        Best of luck!

I personally use godaddy and casey answered all your questions accurately.

The only problem I have with godaddy is all the upgrades tehy try to sell you when all you want is a domain name. I have so many domains with them though that it would be a real hassle for me to leave them now.
If you can find a site that wont bombard you like godaddy does than by all means, go ahead. It might be worth it in the end.

£7 Sound's like you paid a too Much, Make Sure you Use Coupon's when Buying Domain's Just Google Godaddy + Coupon's I Use the $7 Coupon £4.45 Per a .com Unless you Purchased .org

*You Can Pay a Domain 10year's in Advance
In Domain management you Can Turn AutoRenewal Off, SO you Pay Manually when the TIme Comes.
    *Also Use Coupon's When Renewing
*Registration Fee Is Once a Year Unless you Pay for More YEars in Advance

*I've heard of some companys registering your domain in their name without you realising it, how do i best avoid this?

That Won't Happen with the Big Domain Registra's Godaddy/namecheap/1and1/

There's a Fair Few Big Registra's, I Just Stick with GOdaddy Personally for Domain's.

I think that godaddy is the better option why ? because if you want to sell the domain you just want to push it to the buyer account , most domainers have godaddy account .it's easy to manage your domains ..etc
If you care about your domain you need to Turn AutoRenewal on to not lose it ..you can protect your data in whois godady offer free whois privacy for each domain you register in the first year .
