Facebook Ads -CPM vs CPC

Which is better? I want to test drive an ad for a week. FB suggests a bid of 1.13 per click, but I have absolutely no comparison to judge if this is good or not. My daily budget is $5. What say you?

What I have read from the Facebook Gurus suggests one should start testing with PPC and grow into CPM. With your budget, you would probably want to stick to PPC, unless your doing a branding campaign, where clicks are of secondary value.

I say you won't get far with a $5 daily budget, even if you bid half that.

I've been messing around with Facebook ads recently, and here's what I found.

I assume you're asking because of the people that say jump on the CPM deal right away and you'll get .01 clicks all day and make some big coin. Not true.

Don't do CPM until you know that the ads work. CPM is only a good option if people take action, you're paying if they click or not. If you have a ineffective ad that a lot of people see, but very few click, your actual cost per click will be sky high.

If you find that the ad has a high CTR, then switch to CPM, but keep an eye on it and make sure that the CTR is stable.

      So what to do:

-Run some realistic numbers. You're spending $35 a week. 100 people click on your ad, 10 of them act. Does your commission cover your expenses and time?

-Start with more money. You really won't be able to do anything with $5 a day. If that's your budget, I'd look for other traffic sources. Remember that once your ad on Facebook is over and that money is spent, that's it. People will not see it again.

Start with cpc, run your test ads and find which is best.

Do the math and see if CPM is a better deal for you, switch if it is.

Moniter your ads and if the cpc is getting high, pause and start over.

I agree with webapex, its more better to start with ppc and them move to cpm, with this you may get good results

Which is better? The one that's cheaper for you!

I always use CPC while testing, because for each ad that performs well I find at least 10 with a terrible CTR. However, after optimizing the ads it uses to be possible to use CPM. There isn't a hard rule, since everything depends on the demographics that you're targeting, but, in general, if your CTR is above 0.08% it's better to go with CPM.

one bad thing about Facebook CPM, when you switch from CPC to CPM, your CTR WILL drop by haft, yes, I tested many times and the results are the same: with the same ad (which perform at 0.1% for example) running on CPC, changing to CPM will drop the CTR to around 0.048 to 0.05. I pause that CPM ad and run the CPC one again, still 0.1%
so, I guess when switching from CPC to CPM, Facebook double the daily cap per each view to sell MORE impression to the advertisers
that is a cheap tactics, but, well, consider the fact that the cost of CPM is lower and if an advertiser only run CPM, they won't make much
so, test on CPC, and it it work, import it to CPM, but, dont think that you will make alot with it, especially when your CTR drop by haft

CPC for the major countries (UK, USA, Australia etc) and 100% CPM to anywhere non-English speaking has worked very well for me in the dating niche.

    Hi Charlotte Jay,

I think you should not spend any money before knowing details about CPM. I am agreed with Ryan and you should do PPC before doing CPM.

    Good luck.

You should definitely start with CPC but you should also try increasing your daily budget if at all possible and you will see much better results. Is tough to expect much with a low budget..

Last month I posted my own strategy dealing with this exact problem, so you can check it out: http://www.warriorforum.com/ad-netwo...much-less.html

Most of people here shared more or less similar stuff. But I get into more details about the whole thing so it will probably help you get the whole picture.

I'll be adding some new stuff to the thread, but just need to find the time to write it.

    Take care!
