I've heard the term "media buys" thrown around and I tried doing some research but it doesn't give me much on what media buys are.

What are they and how does it work? What are the different avenues with utilizing media buys?

  Great explanation. I don't understand why they can't just call it "banner buying" because that's what it really is.
  
  Media buying in my mind has always been commercials, radio ads, magazine ads, etc.

  Yes media buys refers to just buying banner ads.
  Marketing through video is called as video marketing and rest of them have relevant names, only this term Media Buys looks odd.

the challenge with media buys that you can only do very general advertising, because they run large ad networks such as cnn and msnbc.

If you want to place your banner on related Sites with Highest traffic and willing to pay $$$$ per month for it..that is Known as Media Buy.....
