[STEP-BY-STEP] Facebook Ads Guide: Here is why you're not making money!

Facebook has been around for a while now. It’s no longer a “new” platform and chances are that most affiliates have already got their foot wet with them.

However, I’ve noticed a dramatic increase in the number of threads regarding Facebook ads on this forum during the last few months. Maybe it’s because the platform is getting more popular, maybe it’s because many affiliates have already cracked the code of Facebook and are now making very good money there, but my theory is that more people are starting to use Facebook because it’s the easiest route to promote CPA using paid advertising. AdWords is a tough place for affiliates, and media buys is way too expensive for a beginner with a low budget, so Facebook is the obvious choice.

But people seem not to be using Facebook properly. Most newbies come to the forum to say that Facebook isn’t working for them and claim to have tested many campaigns without making any money. They say their CPC is too high, the conversion rate is poor and the affiliate managers are not helpful.

Well, based on my experience on Facebook and also coaching affiliates, I can say that, without a doubt, the problem is not the offers, platform or affiliate managers. The problem is the affiliates, who don’t know what they are doing.

People pick a random offer just because it has a nice payout, set up a general campaign, spend 10 bucks and then start wondering why they are not getting a return on their investment. Unfortunately, this is not the way we build successful campaigns on Facebook. This is not the way we build successful campaigns on any platform.

So, in the next paragraphs I’ll try to explain the most essential steps anyone must follow in order to set up profitable campaigns on Facebook. Of course, this is just a forum post, so I can’t write a super detailed report here, but I’ll give the main steps involved in the process and I’m sure that if you follow them (all of them) you will be much more likely to start seeing positive results in the next days.

CREATING A CAMPAIGN

1. CHOOSE YOUR NICHE

In the beginning, I don’t recommend you to promote many different offers. Pick a niche and stick with it. If you keep promoting offers in the same niche you will be more likely to understand that particular market and find out what offers perform well and what words and images make people “pull the trigger”.

Also, you should try to start with simple offers in the gaming, dating or mobile niche. People on Facebook are looking for funny things to do, they are talking to friends, watching videos, reading gossip, etc… So don’t ask them to make important decisions such as filling out an endless form to get an insurance quote or buying an expensive supplement. Invite them to know join networks of people, play nice games or download cool ringtones. Give them what they want.

2. PICK THE RIGHT OFFERS

It’s not every offer that accepts social traffic that performs well with social traffic. On Facebook people are browsing really fast and you should avoid promoting offers that take too much time to complete. If it’s too complicated, then it’s not worth it. This is how Facebook users think, and you must respect this mindset if you want them to complete your offers.

So, give preference to 1st or 2nd page submits that don’t involve long forms. Also, avoid email confirmation offers. Basically, the easier, faster to complete the better.

Also, it is important that you choose offers that don’t violate Facebook’s Guidelines or have been blacklisted by them, or your ads won’t get approved.

3. DEFINE THE DEMOGRAPHICS

Never, never go too broad. Define specific demographics for your campaign and try to reach a not too big audience.

If you think your offer can perform well with many different age ranges, then set up different campaigns (or at least different ads) for each of them.

For example, you could have a campaign for men between 20 and 24, then another for 25 – 29 and one more campaign for 30 – 34. Different age groups may have different (sometimes, completely different) performances, so divide your campaign into groups of 5 years and test them separately.

4. DECIDE ON THE ANGLE

It seems that most people don’t even know what an angle is, and it’s sad, because building a successful campaign on Facebook without having an angle is very, very hard.

Bascially, an angle is an approach, a strategy that you use to reach a specific audience and make them relate to your campaign.

For example, if you’re going to promote a dating offer to young males, you could try to target men who like soccer. It’s very easy, you just need to use interests related to soccer such as name of teams, events and famous players. Then, you could use images of girls wearing t-shirts of famous soccer teams and say things like “Girls like it too!” or “Find someone like you”.

We are not allowed to mention the interest we’re targeting in the ad copy, but it’s easy to find a way around it using the images.

Of course, this was just an example, you could use other sports, movies, books, events, hobbies, food, drinks, etc… The most important thing is that you use an angle to reach a specific audience and then find a way to connect the dots between your offer the interest of your audience.

I also recommend you to come up with more than one angle before you start testing a campaign. It’s not every angle that works, so you want to have options.

5. CREATE ADS

Good ads are absolutely essential for a successful Facebook campaign. The math on Facebook is very simple:

+ CTR = - CPC

The higher your CTR the lower your CPC. So you need to test many ads and find the ones with the best performance. Start with at least 10 ads per angle, but be prepared to upload more if none of them cross the 0.1% (CTR) line.

OPTIMIZING A CAMPAIGN

1. SPLIT-TESTING ADS

Run several ads simultaneously, focus on testing more images than ad copies and aim for a CTR of at least 0.1%, ideally more.

Start bidding within the suggested range and pause/drop ads as soon as they reach 2,000 impressions with no clicks. Also, drop ads that reach 5,000 impressions with a low CTR. I know some people would recommend you to wait longer, but successful ads are successful right from the beginning, so there is no reason for you to waste money on the bad ones.

2. DECREASING YOUR BID

You will see that Facebook will automatically attribute a lower CPC to ads with a higher CTR. However, you can also decrease your bid manually (and slowly) and keep doing this until you notice that Facebook started delivering less impressions to your ad.

Another possibility is switching your ads to CPM and start paying per impressions. However, when you do it Facebook will increase the frequency cap of your ads and your CTR will decrease, so you need to have ads with a CTR above 0.15%, maybe 0.2% to do it.

3. IMPROVING THE CONVERSION RATE

Having a low CPC is obviously not enough if your offer doesn’t convert. So, it’s also important to split-test offers and find out which ones perform better with your audience.

Eventually, you may need to create landing pages. Not complex websites, just simple one page HTML sites. It happens because you’re using an angle, so people see something in your ad, click on it but then don’t see anything related to that on the offer’s page.

For example, you could have an ad somewhat related to soccer, but then when people reached the offer’s page they wouldn’t see anything related to soccer and would close the window, because you didn’t deliver what you offered.

So, in this case, you may need to create a landing page that will connect the dots between the ad and the offer. It could be a page similar to the offer’s page (same style, colors, etc), but saying something related to soccer.

But keep it simple, use a headline, some bullets, one or a few images and a call-to-action. Don’t overcomplicate.

Also, test a few landing pages, because 1 out of 5 or 6 tends to perform well, so don’t work with just one option.

IMPORTANT TIPS

1. GO INTERNATIONAL

Some people say it is better to go international because the US is saturated. Well, this is not my opinion. I don’t think the US or the other main English speaking countries are saturated, I just believe that they have higher numbers.

By higher numbers I mean higher payouts and higher CPC. So, yes, the cost is higher, but the earnings potential, too, so there is a compensation.

The problem is the testing phase. While you’re testing a campaign you’re running it with a negative ROI, your CPC is high and your conversion arte isn’t optimized. So, during this phase, the US can be more expensive than other countries. While you would need $50 to test a campaign in an Asian country, you woul need $200 or $250 to test it in the US.

Of course, the US can give you more volume and make you more money in the long run, but if you’re a beginner who are testing campaigns on a tight budget, I highly recommend you to start the easy way and target international countries.

When I say “international” I mean anything outside the US, but, if possible, you should try to avoid the UK, AU and CA, too, and focus more on non-english speaking countries.

2. TRANSLATE YOUR ADS AND LANDING PAGES

When targeting a non-english speaking country, it’s absolutely essential that you translate the ads to the native language of that country. If you’re targeting France, Italy, etc you can just use Google Translator for your ads.

However, if you’re targeting China, Japan, etc or using landing pages, then you should hire someone to translate your content. www.onehourtranslation.com is a good place to find good translators. It isn’t very cheap, it costs $0.07 per word, but considering that you will be submitting just few sentences, it probably won’t cost you more than $5 per campaign.

3. CLOACKING

Cloacking is important.

First, I’ve noticed that using directly the affiliate link makes it tougher to get the ads approved.

Second and most important, when promoting an international offer you will most certainly have problems with the redirect feature that all CPA networks have.

Facebook reviewers are in the US, so when they click on your link to review your offer they will be redirected to another offer, maybe something completely different, because they are not in the area allowed by the offer you’re trying to promote. Therefore, they will reject your ad (they can’t approve the ad if they can’t review the destination page).

I use a custom PHP script that redirects my visitors to the affiliate link and anyone who is in a different country (including Facebook reviewers) to the offer’s homepage. So, for example, if I was promoting Be2, I would send people to www.mydomain.com/be2.php and the be2.php file would contain a script that would send my visitors (people who click on my ad) to my affiliate link and Facebook reviewers to www.be2.com.

However, you don’t need to use a custom script, here is a thread that explains a very nice (and simple) alternative to solve this problem:

http://www.warriorforum.com/ad-netwo...-earnings.html

4. IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE EXPENSIVE

Testing campaigns on Facebook does NOT need to be expensive. Just start with international offers, set up very specific campaigns and control your budget properly. Spend $15 - $25 a day (depends on your initial CPC), eliminate bad ads soon and split-test offers and ads simultaneously. If you do it, you will see that it doesn’t require a lot of money to find a winner on Facebook.

5. BE PERSISTENT

Most campaigns will never be profitable, this is a fact. So be persistent and don’t give up just because your first campaign didn’t perform well.

After the optimization, chances are that just 20% or so of your campaigns will have a positive ROI, maybe less if you don’t have any experience, so be prepared to invest some time and money to crack the code of this platform.

6. SCALE YOUR CAMPAIGNS

Campaigns on Facebook die away fast, it’s a sad reality. However, a good way around it is to scale your campaigns.

Once you find a winning combination, try to expand it to other demographics or even other countries. If an angle is working well, try to use it with other campaigns targeting different countries and promoting different offers. It doesn’t work 100% of the times, but sometimes it does, so it’s well worth it.

Uff... We got a big post here, didn't we?

But the paragraphs above contain the most important steps I (and many other affiliates, I’m sure) follow to set up successful campaigns on Facebook.

Basically, the idea of this post is give you a simple process to follow and show you that we can’t just guess. Guessing doesn’t work, we need to test, optimize and build successful campaigns based on real data. So don’t set up campaigns and expect to make money right from the beginning, be prepared to go though and optimization process and make your decisions based on solid data.

I don’t want to make this post even longer, so I won’t add more information. However, if you have questions or there is something above that’s not clear, feel free to post your questions here. I’ve been very busy lately but I’ll do my best to reply to all the questions asap!

To Your Success,

William

Even my account was banned and I created a new account. Till now I haven't faced any problem.
But I have seen few saying that when they had created second account facebook banned that also.
Facebook is totally unpredictable in my opinion.
So why not try your luck with creating new account. But don't forget to use different CC details in new account.

Yes, try to get another account maybe using a someone else's name and a different CC# and IP address. I don't think you would have problems.

Great thread. Learned a lot of new things. I have a question for you though. Would you use these same tips to get likes to a fanpage? I'm planning on building a decent size fanpage and then occasionally recommending offers (to a landing page). I've been getting some likes using Facebook Ads but right now, it is looking like the campaign will be expensive because I'm getting around 50 fans per $9 I spend.

A few things could be different, but the process to optimize the campaign and reduce the costs would be the same.

I recommend you to start always with CPC. Then, when you find ads with high CTR (0.15%+) you can try to run them with CPM. Your CTR will decrease, but since the CPM bid is lower than the CPC bid, you may still have a good compensation.

Yes, they're cutting down on BizOpp offers.

But you can probably get another account using someone else's name and CC (try a relative or a close friend) and start running stuff there again.

This is great information. It's nice to have it all spelled out so clearly. I think you did an excellent job of showing that putting time and effort into a campaign is what makes it successful, Facebook or otherwise.

I have to say that your advice to focus on a specific demographic, creating multiple campaigns if necessary to cover all demographics you think may be profitable is excellent. And, of course, split testing and persistence. Thanks for posting!

    Anyway,
For newbie who starting out FB or CPA. Try do something like what William describe how a FB campaign should work. Yes, you might be losing some bucks here or there but I strongly believe you'll get conversion.
Don't over complicated things and try with some weird stuff now. You'll get no conversions and leave fb for good in frustration. So even if its losing money, but you get conversions there's hope and you'll get motivated.

This post I would say worth $57..lol

"So even if its losing money, but you get conversions there's hope and you'll get motivated"

Not only some conversions could bump your motivation, but they could give you some data. Building campaigns (not only on FB, but on any platform) is all about gethring data, analyzing it and making decisions based on numbers.

So don't be afraid to get started! Pick a simple lead gen international offer, find a few nice angles, target a tight demographic and start testing stuff. Test ads, offers and even landing pages if necessary. Maybe (probably) your first campaign won't be profitable, but the best way to learn how to play this game is by playing it, so you will learn how to optimize your campaigns and improve your numbers, and this skill will be essential for you to start making money with CPA.

williamrms, how large is your estimated reach when your targeting a "tight" demographic for a campaign? or what is the minimum reach you'll test with?

i notice when going international the reach is much smaller, and when you apply the mandatory rules for FB dating offers (ex: male, single, interested in women) the reach gets even smaller.. so what do you do when you see this? or do you even apply the FB dating rules??

I usually try to have a reach between 8,000 and 20,000 when testing campaigns. However, in the beginning your concern shouldn't be to do volume, but get a good ROI, so you can start very tight and then go broader once you find an effective angle and ads with a high CTR.

      great information thanks a lot!

till you seem very knowledgeable if you talk about scaling how much do the big boys make w/ fb ads? are there any limits? ^^ i wrote somewhere that the daily budget is limited first but can be increased by time do you know more about it? would be cool to here some baller stories

i mean if you have the skills to get a avg roi of 20% (i guess that's even oretty low?) and your daily budget ist $5k there you go $1k per day

scaling is really the greatest thing about the hole internet marketing you gotta love it

Yes, you will have a daily limit to how much you can spend, but FB will automatically increase this limit after you start doing a certain volume. Also, you can contact them in case you need to have your daily spent increased.

So, the sky is the limit.

You can make 4 figures a day on FB in profits, it's certainly possible. I'd say that the only obstacle for achieving high numbers would be the fact that campaigns on FB usually do not last long. So, we need to be constantly working on new campaigns and angles. However, it's relatively simple to get new campaigns going and turn a positive ROI with social PPC, so there is a good compensation.

Much appreciated information! Thank you. I was having problems getting my ads approved and if I did(and changed one thing like maybe the stroke color around the ad) they(FB Gods of ad approval) sometime would not approve the ad for a simple little change such as the color frame. The kicker is that I would change the ad back to exactly how it was and resubmit the ad(that was previously approved and running) and that would be denied too. There is a lot of inconsistencies on ad approval and people's personal accounts are getting shut down after too many unproved ads... So, sorry to rant but I don't want to loose my account because I love the targeted traffic that FB PPC has, it would be nice to have a black and white line in their ad (facts, faq, vague BS rules), so you can get as close to it without crossing it, and know your account will be there when you check it. Ok, I feel better.. thanks for listening to me rant.

    Brian

P.S. If you are new to FB PPC and are looking to try it out, head over to fiverr.com and do a search for FB ad coupons.. you can sometimes get 3Xs $50.00 vouchers for $5 - you can only use one on your account, but for people running campaigns for clients, you can add $50 onto the campaign costs for a few bucks. Good luck! Thanks again for the great info!

Yes, I do admit their approval system can be a pain in the a** sometimes. However, I honestly believe (and I know that some people may disagree with me here) that this is not a major problem.

Ok, it's annoying to have an ad disapproved today and the exact same ad approved tomorrow. But, most of the times, when it happens the mistake was not when the ad was disapproved, but whaen it was approved! This is the reason why many ads get disapproved after running for a few days and, in certain cases, even accounts get banned.

So submitting the same ads multiple times is probably not the best way around this problem. Of course FB's approval system isn't consistent and it can be worth it to resubmit an ad once or twice, but doing this many times isn't wise.

The best solution for this problem is simply to understand what you can and what you can't run. It applies to both ads and offers. Unfortunately, FB's guidelines are not as flexible as they used to be a year or 2 ago, so it's impolrtant that we understand this and do not keep insisting on running stuff that's not allowed.

FB's rules are not as hard as Google's yet, so it's still not necessarily to play against them, it's still possible to play the game by their rules.

Having a high CTR is certainly the best way to decrease the CPC, but the social metric can help, too.

Regarding the CPC, there isn't a fixed number that you should reach, because it depends on many factors such as country, demographics, etc...

The campaigns always have some variations in the conversion rate, it's never static, even when we do a lot of volume.

A campaign may have a ROI around 100% today and then 70% or even 60% tomorrow. It's normal. So, avoid running campaigns that give you just a tiny profits margin.

You have put up a detailed and excellent guide. However, as I was reading it I realized that there is so much for me to learn in CPA and paid ads. Till now I have only been using SEO to get traffic to my site. I have become quite good in getting my sites ranked for my chosen keywords. However, now I want to get into the PPC and paid traffic arena.

In fact, just reading the post makes me feel a little worried whether I will be able to achieve success with this. It looks all too complicated and too much to learn at the moment.

It feels like how you would feel on your first day while learning swimming. It feels as if you will never be able to learn swimming. However, as you attend a few more classes it starts to feel easier. I hope the same thing happens for me with this too.

By the way, your onehourtranslation.com service seems a good one to use.

Yes Paid traffic is some thing different as compared to SEO, you can drive traffic to any offer in no time and can judge if it is converting offer or not. In SEO you have to wait for long time to rank your keywords and to judge and to make changes. It is not that much difficult to learn it and I personally know William, he is really good coach and know how to teach. I personally go with paid advertising and when an offer start converting for me with good ROI then I try to do SEO for that specific offer. Just my two cents

This is just what I've been looking for! Than you for this informative post! I am a newbie in CPA marketing, so I think I must start with your method.

I have a question though. It might sound silly, sorry for that!

You give great tips here about facebook campaign! So do I have to build a landing page on which I promote offers and run FB ads for that landing page or what I need is just building an attractive facebook page and promote offers on that page using FB ads? Is the second one what you mean with direct linking? Or does direct linking mean the affiliate link I place on FB ads?

As I said, I'm a newbie and I've been searching a lot and learning things. I take CPA marketing very seriously to earn money, so I'm really prepared and persistent to work hard on it. However, there are lots of things to learn and I need help! So I'd be glad to get any reply for my questions!

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Williamrs,

So with this custom cloacking script that you use, do you promote offers that Facebook doesn't necessary like such as mobile re-bill and toolbar download offers?

    Thanks for the informative guide...

Originally Posted by williamrs View Post

    Cloacking is important.

First, I've noticed that using directly the affiliate link makes it tougher to get the ads approved.

Second and most important, when promoting an international offer you will most certainly have problems with the redirect feature that all CPA networks have.

Facebook reviewers are in the US, so when they click on your link to review your offer they will be redirected to another offer, maybe something completely different, because they are not in the area allowed by the offer you're trying to promote. Therefore, they will reject your ad (they can't approve the ad if they can't review the destination page).

I use a custom PHP script that redirects my visitors to the affiliate link and anyone who is in a different country (including Facebook reviewers) to the offer's homepage. So, for example, if I was promoting Be2, I would send people to www.mydomain.com/be2.php and the be2.php file would contain a script that would send my visitors (people who click on my ad) to my affiliate link and Facebook reviewers to www.be2.com.

However, you don't need to use a custom script, here is a thread that explains a very nice (and simple) alternative to solve this problem:

I get level 2 yahoo accounts suspended all day long but i've got about 100. Just how it works even if your not soliciting advertising of a website and just trying to help people on yahoo answers posting website links can get you suspended. They don't mind youtube links though.

As for Facebook ad's never had much luck myself found it too saturated and touch and go for ad approval. I found it more effort than its worth but i wouldnt mind hearing from someone who has made it work since Youtube is currently my area of expertise, But so far i've only ever spoke to people who are testing the water on the facebook ad front as opposed to people making a stable amount of money daily with it, Great information none the less from William. Just would be interested to hear how many people make this work consistently.

Yes, FB still offers vouchers. You can get one on Fiverr. Also, some hosting companies offer vouchers (check if yours does).

But make sure that you only use a voucher if your account is new.

Wow! That's got of be one of the most informative posts I've seen in a while there williamrs.

Looks like you have the Facebook ad scene down pat.

I have a 6 part video course I'm selling right now that covers some of those topics as well but in video form. Maybe we could do a jv and see what happens. What do you say?

Pm me if you're interested ok?

I absolutely suck at FaceBook ads, but can totally own other paid methods (even other PPC methods).

I'm not sure why I suck unfathomably with FaceBook ads, but with this guide, I'm confident I can at least make a positive effort.

PS: I noticed my average Cost Per Click was wicked high on FaceBook. I can get wicked cheap clicks elsewhere (targeted clicks), but on FaceBook the clicks just seem very expensive. I didn't give it much of a testing phase, but this threw me off and discouraged me.

What do you guys pay for average click, and what variables determine what you pay? (Are some niches / demographics more expensive particularly on FaceBook?) Thanks for anyone with experience.

The price changes according to your demographics, country, interests, CTR, etc... So, it's hard to say what's the average CPC, it can be very high or very low depending on what you're doing.

TIP: Be BRUTAL with your ads. As the OP rightly says, if you get to 5000 impressions and the CTR is no good, get rid of the ad!

You may be tempted to let an ad keep running because you like the copy or image and think it should be performing well, but if it isn't - it isn't and that's not gonna change after another 15,000 impressions.

Be brutal, it saves you money!

Good tip! When an ad is good it's good right from the beginning, so there is no point in spending lot's of money in an ad with a bad performance.

    Hi williamrs!

    Great post here!
One question: do you usually split the ads in different ad groups or in totally different campaigns?

    Thanks

On FB, we don't have the ad groups like we have on Google. So, I usually create one campaign per offer and put all of my ads promoting that offer under the same campaign.

      Example:

      * Be2 CA
      - M 20-29 Ad 1 Img 1
      - M 20-29 Ad 1 Img 2
      etc...
