Self-Serve Display Ad Networks?

Hello,

I am looking at doing some CPM advertising in conjunction with an affiliate offer. This is a shipped product produced by a nationally recognized company and pays out $32.

I have a relatively small budget for testing - between $200-$400. I would like to gather information about how well the offer converts within a targeted demographic, as well as how well the ads perform in terms of CTR and conversion rates.

I do not want to advertise on the Google Display Network. Are there alternatives? What approach would folks reccomend with a budget this size? Is it even close to big enough to find a little gold?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/ideas!

Akaelo, try out Yabuka or Sitescout. They allow you to hand pick the domains you want to advertise on, similar to what you're doing on the Display Network, and they also have the basic targetting parameters (geo targeting, frequency cap etc..). Both use the CPM model.

SiteScout is the best in my opinion. Minimum however is $500. Pulse360 used to have a minimum of $25, I believe it's still the same, not 100% sure though.

Sitescout is a $500 minimum I believe, while Yabuka is a $1000 minimum.

Pulse360 works with the CPC model, not CPM, so it does not quite fit what the OP is looking for.

It may work for some instances, but If I recall correctly, those do not have geo-targeting, frequency capping or any other targeting features features. You pay for the banner in advance, and hope it is profitable, so it doesn't live you much room for adjustment.

So if your offer is for the US only, and you find a placement that has mostly US traffic, still, a significant chunk of the traffic, the non-US traffic, will be going to waste, unless you have a complex geo-redirect, that sends particular geos to an offer for that region, even then, you still have some traffic going to waste from some countries that don't have offers for.

BuySellAds might work with a Clickbank product, since those are not geo-restricted like the CPA offers, but you'd have to find a really relevant site to your niche, and hope your up-front paid money don't go to waste.

I see, very good point. I suppose there is still potential for a well converting offer though I havnt seen much supporting data around the forum.

    Check out my comapany.

We offer auto split testing of ads, landing pages and demographics. We allow geo targeting or geo restricting.

We offer realtime stats as well so you can see how well your campagin is running. Basically you load up some banners, try a few the same size, you load your landing page, input your budget and bid and away you go.

We have 2 account managers and would love to help you.

    Thanks for all the recommendations.

With regards to your budget, it's definitely on the smaller side for display advertising. It normally takes a larger budget, out of necessity, to properly test out display campaigns. However, if you leverage some advanced tools like contextual targeting, you can run highly targeting campaigns that match your target demographic (based on behavioral inference) and go from there. This approach basically allows you to run a campaign, not on an individual site (for example) but rather across the reach of 90% of the web, but targeting only pages that match your categorical criteria (e.g., health and fitness - if it were a diet product). More details on this approach can be found here: Part 7: Contextual Targeting
