The Power of Facebook Sponsored Stories - Clicks for Pennies

Sponsored Stories from are a great way to get laser targeted traffic to pretty much any website or landing page you build. I have been focusing on Sponsored Stories since they launched, but I've decided to go ahead and share some of my stats from the past few weeks and explain where this traffic is going.

As you can see from the screenshot above, over the past 27 days my Sponsored Stories campaigns have generated 1,250,705 impressions, 4,372 clicks, 74,494 actions and it's only cost me $130.02 with a $0.10 CPM and $0.03 CPC average. I have made a very nice profit and generated a lot of traffic from this campaign.

The majority of that traffic is being used to generate super targeted Likes to different fan pages I own. Here are two of them:I also have campaigns setup for other fan pages I own, but I'm not going to disclose those because I don't want to generate a ton of competition for myself. However, the traffic sent to the two mentioned above has helped build the mailing lists for both sites at a very low cost. I know that because I am using Google Analytics to track my campaigns. I actually did a complete article on how I use Sponsored Stories to generate traffic for my blog that you might want to check out:
Using Sponsored Stories to Generate Blog Traffic

The primary reason I setup Sponsored Stories campaigns is not for the initial traffic you get from the actual ad campaign. I use them to build up fan pages so I can then advertise to my fan pages. Over the past year I have built up one particular fan page to over 150,000 VERY active fans. I post content on it daily to keep them engaged and once in awhile I'll include some sort of affiliate content so I can earn some money from my efforts. I recently developed an entire website based on the niche of my fan page and of course, started posting about that. The image above is a screenshot of my Google Analytics last Friday night right before my server crashed At one point I had over 1,200 users from my fan page funneled to my site!

It's important as an affiliate marketer that you think long term. Yes, it's fantastic to setup a campaign and get conversions right away, but if you are able to build a mailing list or website with that traffic you will be able to monetize those "clicks" for a lot longer and earn more money from that initial investment.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with you my thoughts on the direction Facebook Advertising should be going with Sponsored Stories. Let's make some money!

lol, thanks. I've gotten quite a few of my screenshots stolen in the past and decided it's worth the 30 seconds to add a watermark

Sponsored Stories are a type of ad you can buy on Facebook.

Sponsored stories are messages coming from friends about them engaging with your Page, app or event that a business, organization or individual has paid to highlight so there’s a better chance people see them.

Great info Luke. I'm queuing myself up one right now. But quick question. When you pay the 7bucks to promote your post, does it go to the top of all of your friends newsfeed or is there a certain limit to it?

      Hi Luke.

Great info and definitely something I'm gonna try. Just a question for you or anyone that wants to respond...

How do you feel this method compares to other forms of Paid Traffic and even buying Clicks via Solo Ads. I mean does anyone have an idea how the same $ spend with the same offer will compare. Let's say I put $100 into Solo Ads, $100 into buying traffic via Infolinks (or any other site) for example, & dropping a $100 on a Sponsored Stories FB Campaign.

I wonder which one will generally convert best and put the most money in my pocket?

I know a very accurate answer will depend on a TON of variables and can only be answered by an actual test but a generalized opinion would suffice.

BTW, been reading your blog. You have some GREAT content on there.

Thanks Luke, those stats are pretty insane!

I'm running a FB gig to my page http://facebook.com/smodhaseo

I'm up to a 2726 impressions with a CTR of 0.11%. Only started the campaign two days ago.

I have to say I am loving FB ads at the moment. Yes, it's paid traffic but the results are instant.

One question, how are your CPM and CPC bids so small? I'm still getting to grips with that.

I've seen Sponsored feed posts throughout my news feed so I imagine it depends on how Facebook feels at the moment when the page loads.

Happy you like my blog. I would recommend you make a small budget for the different traffic sources you want to test and then track conversions to see which one works best. What source will work best depends on the site. For affposts I'm seeing the best results from a few small media buys I did. My blog didn't do so great from the media buys, but is doing awesome from my retargeting campaign.

The trick is to get a high CTR and it also depends on the type of ad you setup. I actually just did a complete post on this that you should definitely check out at:

    Hello Dowell,

Yes while running sponsored stories, your ad is pushed to all of your friend's newsfeeds...I guess it is important to have the post written in such a way that potential fans will take some action..for example a poll question could be a good idea.. For one of my offline clients, I ran a poll question which a lot of people answered via sponsored stories. So the post went viral

The other thing about Luke is you can tell he knows what he's talking about and he talks the talks and walks the walk, which is rare for AM's and some network reps these days. Kudos to him and peerfly for "keeping it real"

You can target both new users and friends of fans (Sponsored Stories) with Facebook Ads for Pages. Like you said, for Sponsored Stories to work you need a decent fan base, but the engagement on those is pretty insane

    Great post, Luke!

I use sponsored stories a lot for my local clients and for my own CPA campaigns.

The traffic is very, very cheap, and if used properly it gives an awesome return.

That's great to hear. I haven't done any local marketing, but I think it would be interesting to try.

The other great thing about Facebook Ads Page/Sponsored Stories traffic is that it's very consistent. Once you get a campaign running and generating Likes at a low cost you can basically leave it and forget about it

I'm struggling with the the Sponsored Stories. I'm not sure why it's targeting such a narrow user base. I haven't filtered using Interests and yet the Reach is only 1,600 users.

With Sponsored Stories (B from the picture above) you are targeting just friends of people who already Like your page. So, if your page is not big then your reach will not be that big. If you create a regular ad (A from above) then you can use that along with Sponsored Stories to advertise to a target audience and their friends.
