There's a phrase from Sun Tzu's Art Of War called 'Know the enemy and know yourself and in a hundred battles, you will never be in peril'. Well, how do we apply that to marketing? We could use it to apply to our competition for example. The customer is certainly not the enemy, but if we were to rephrase it, I would say 'Know the customer and know yourself and you'll never be poor'.

In business, it is important to know the customers' needs and wants. What we think is right for them doesn't matter. All that matters is what they want. Sometimes, in Internet marketing, it is easy to forget this as we get distracted by all the technological bells and whistles.

So what are some ways to get to know your customers? For starters, you can find out what products in the market they are already buying. This gives you a clue as to what drives your customers to whip out their wallet and buy. If you were looking to create a Clickbank product, a good idea would be to peruse the Clickbank marketplace to see what products are at the top of the sales charts.

Another good way to know what makes your customers tick is to survey them. If you have a list, you can survey your customers and ask them what they would like to see from you in terms of content, products etc. Or you can even use surveys as a list building method. Offer a free incentive such as a free report for those who complete the survey.

You can also visit forums in your market to see what the hot topics are. What kinds of topics are receiving the most views and replies? A hot topic can be a good platform for a new product or a simple blog post. Speaking of blog posts, you can also learn about your customers by interacting with them on your blog.

Social networking sites are another way to see what your market is talking about. Twitter is especially useful for this as you can check out the real-time chatter on topics just by using Twitter's search page. Don't underestimate the power of Twitter for market research and of course, generating buzz as well!
