Smart Ways of Designing a Home Office for Visitors
- ARTICLES |
A small business owner needs a base of operations. Whether you have an online or offline business, a home office is necessary to stay organized and also to meet with potential clients.
Do you have a home office? If you don’t, consider creating one. Here are some advantages of a home office:
- A place to work uninterrupted by your family
- A place to organize all of your business files and keep your equipment and workspace in one area
- It is a tax-deductible part of your home that can lower your taxable income
- A place to meet with visitors (your potential clients)
That will take a design strategy. Here are some ideas to utilize your space and to choose the right space for your home office.
Choose a room with a door
If it is possible, a room with a door affords you privacy when meeting with clients. There may be kids running around outside, but it is easier to tune them out when the door is closed. And, if you ignore them, the client may be able to also. If you don’t have a door, create some sort of solution where the rest of the house is not visible from your office. Install a sliding door in the doorway to another room, use folding screens or use another creative idea.
Allow your desk to be the center of the room
When clients come they will need a place to sit. It is easier on the neck if they are sitting across from you. In this case, use a separate table space for file folders and office supplies so that the majority of your desk top is free to work with your visitors.
Use another table
If clients will be coming to your home office, you can create a separate work area in the office if you have space. In this case your desk can sit in the corner. The focal point will be the table with two comfortable chairs where you and your visitor can hold a meeting.
Let in the light
Use light-colored curtains or blinds to regulate the amount of light in the room. Schedule meetings in the morning or early afternoon when more light will be entering the room. If you don’t have a window in your office room, consider handing a lighted ceiling fan to illuminate the entire room.
Design your home office with the potential client in mind. Make space for them to feel comfortable so you can earn their business.
