Five Adsense Myths
- ARTICLES |
These five myths are some of the most common and not true at all.
==> Myth #1 - You Can't Show Other Ads Besides AdSense
Not true at all. According to the AdSense Terms of Service, you just can't display other contextual advertising.
In other words, you can't put other ads on your site that reads your site's text and then serves up ads based on what it thinks your users want.
However, you're free to sell your own ads. You're free to put affiliate links up. You're free to monetize your own site just about any other way, just not through contextual advertising.
==> Myth #2 - More Ad Units Means More Money
A lot of marketers will absolutely max out all their ad units. While this is actually what makes the most money sometimes, it very often isn't the right strategy.
A lot of ads can make your site look bad aesthetically and increase your bounce rate. Sometimes having just one very well placed ad that works well with your site will increase your overall CPM.
The only way to know is to test.
==> Myth #3 - You Only Make Less Than $.xx Per Click
It's not true that you only make pennies per click. Some sites can pay as high as $5 dollars a click or more.
It's often hard to get traffic to these kinds of high paying sites. In the famous example of mesothelioma, where lawyers were paying as high as $12 a click, it very, very quickly became just about impossible to get any rankings.
That said, if you're earning $5 a click, you need just 1/100th of the traffic you'd need at $.05 a click to make the same amount. It's a tradeoff.
==> Myth #4 - AdSense is the Best Way to Make Money from a Site
AdSense is just one way to monetize a website. For some sites, it really is the best and simplest way. For other sites, AdSense just doesn't work all that well.
It's often a good idea to use AdSense as a launching pad. Use it to get your website(s) to profitability, then experiment with other ways of monetizing.
==> Myth #5 - High Traffic is the Secret to Success
Yes, having a lot of traffic is important. That said, it's not the end all be all.
As discussed above, there are situations where 1/100th of the traffic can earn you more than having a lot of traffic.
It's not just about the traffic quantity, but the traffic quality.
StumbleUpon could easily send you 30,000 unique visitors in a day if you post something that goes viral, but they won't necessarily click on anything. They might even crash your server.
Quality traffic is where the money's at.
These are five of the most frequent myths people hear when it comes to Google AdSense.
