------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The common mistake some people make is that they think if someone subscribes to their list, they'll automatically open every single email from you. Well, hate to tell you this, but that won't happen very often unless you make your subject line very intriguing!

Even if you subscribers have open your email that doesn't mean they'll read it all the way through. It's you job to keep their interest. Otherwise they may give up half way through, and that's not good especially if the product you're promoting is at the end of the message.

Subject Line

Not too long ago, a colleague of mine sent a message with the subject "Where to store media files on the server". At the end of the message he asked to contact us for any queries or training. We didn't receive a single query from a 600 people strong department! I told him to change the subject of the email to " Are you struggling with media files?". He then re-sent the email and the results were better! Here is why the second email was better:

Firstly, I was connecting to the user by asking them a question, even though the email was sent to a large group of people, I made it feel like I'm talking to that specific person.

Secondly, I was able to raise some doubt and intrigue in the reader's mind.
They were probably worried that they were doing something wrong and even if they were confident, were probably curious about that mistake was.

Bum most of all, I didn't give away what the email was all about. With the first email, they already know what the email is about. The second example gives a teaser about what the topic is but leads them to find out more.

Email Body

One of the most common and annoying mistake that some people do is that they launch those long 50000 words stories about themselves like how successful and rich they are ( the squeeze page owners make the same mistake). We know you're wonderful and it's nice that you have all this cars and yachts but people are waiting to hear about how you are going to help them and what you have to offer. Remember that people are looking to gain something from you so you have to state clearly what exactly they're going to achieve from reading your email.

Once you briefly introduced yourself, just "talk" to them in a friendly way. This way they won't feel like that are being pitched to and will put them at ease, but at the same time don't lose your main point. This has a big benefit, it will put your reader's minds at rest and they won't feel like they are having a product or service rammed down their throats from a salesperson.

Break up your email with some bullet points; it's a great way of refocusing their attention. Don't make your sentences or paragraphs too long. Also, if you have a chance, you can break up large chunks of texts with headings.

Tell Them What to Do Next

There have been so many times when after I read the email I'm kind of lost of what I'm supposed to be doing next. Should I be clicking a link? Should I be checking for more emails?

It is very important that once you have your readers interested in your product or
service that you then tell them exactly what you want them to do.

It may seem obvious, but there have been so many times when customers get lost and frustrated, they hit the back button. Just stick to that one thing and ask them to do it!
You don't need to act like a boss , but it's ok to be specific with your instructions. After all, you're just giving them step by step instructions of what to do.

Do you want to know how I do it?
