While there are some strategies to achieve that, here's what a perfect backlink should look like:
** It should reside on a related websites and pages. If your website is about cooking and you have backlinks from real estate websites, it doesn't make any sense (it's a very obvious search engine manipulation technique)
** It shouldn't be built with the intent of manipulating the search engines through anchor text. Your main intention should be building an online brand and get traffic to your website, not manipulate the search engine results.
** It should be willingly given, not forced or self-obtained. You should remember, backlinks are votes of confidence. If you can obtain them easily (like publishing articles on article directories) then it's no longer a vote of confidence from the owner of a website and the ranking power is diluted. It doesn't mean it won't help you a little, it just means it's far from being the "perfect backlink"
We don't live in a perfect world and you shouldn't obsess over perfection either. No matter what you do, you will have some bad links in your profile. If you're doing the right things most of the time though, it will not matter.
