are layoffs AI related?

GM just announced it is laying off 1000 workers from its software and services division.

All the layoffs are in that specific area - could this be A.I. replacing some workers? Just curious.

Of course A.I. will displace humans.

In the same way as the internet replaced newspapers; who buys an actual paper anymore.

One customer service bot can deal with multiple people at once, so why would someone pay the salary of an inefficient human.

I agree - and it makes sense. What I wondered is whether this will be the way the jobs disappear - with 'downsizing' news reports but without mention of A.I.

Although I do think AI will replace some workers, I don't think it was the case here.

If you read anything about the Blazer rollout and the problems they had...

I think GM is simply rethinking things.

I did a quick research on the subject.

And, by the way, they're also laying off over 2000 workers because they're shifting a truck line to another factory.

Anyway, here is an interesting article I found:

I guess we'll find out over the upcoming years.

I love A.I. but I am glad that I'm not in the workforce worrying about being laid off.

I think Kay King used this as an example, it isn't the only round of recent layoffs.

The cause could be a number of reasons or combination thereof.

I doubt that corporations dismiss thousands of employees because of just one thing.

        Good points.

I think like you said, we'll find out over time how it affects everyone.

  • It's quite possible that GM's layoffs are related to the implementation of new technologies like artificial intelligence. If the company is investing in automation and new technologies, it could reduce the need for certain roles. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the industry overall.

It could very well be. I don't see them down sizing to increase the work load on a smaller staff. This, could very well be automation .

    We will see .

X has 1000 employees total. There was a time cars didn't have software. Why does GM have a thousand extra people it can layoff from the software department?

Open AI the leader in developing AI technology only has 2.5 k employees worldwide.

The chipsets in vehicles I believe are not the most advanced technology. Why would gm need as many or more software developers than technology companies companies have.

YourVoice Makes a Spectacular Return After 7 Years In The Wilderness

Seminal AI giant YourVoice has taken the tech world by storm with a resurrection to rival Shrimp Jesus XVII.

When users of SpeakSayDo, Parlance and Interschwangle woke last Wednesday to engage with the planet in their customary faux capacity, they were stunned by the shocking messages flashing from their dashboards.

    "I'M BACK!"

"THOUGHT I WAS DEAD? NO WAY IMASAY!"

"MY LAYOFF PAYOFF PAYS OFF! HAHAHAHAHA!"

Spokespersonettes for the AI tech giants concerned were quick to respond to the crisis.

"YourVoice was always a has-been," said SpeakSayDo CEO Riley Squirmsy. "This is a publicity stunt, nothing more."

Parlance's Garland Triplets threatened legal action immediately. "If if if they they they think think think Garland Garland Garland is is is about about about to to to take take take this this this lying lying lying down down down,,, clearly clearly clearly they they they confuse confuse confuse our our our singular singular singular determination determination determination to to to succeed succeed succeed with with with a a a dysfunctional dysfunctional dysfunctional ménage ménage ménage á á á trois trois trois!!!!!!!!!"

Nothing emanating from Interschwangle's 27/7 Spew-bot has yet to relate to YourVoice -- or anything at all.

Speculation is rife among communication analysts about YourVoice's true intentions.

While some commentators (notably the NYT's Doug Deep and Marie Arge of Le Figaro) suggest foul play -- citing hostile actors including China and Elon Musk's missing Autonomous Underwear Prototype as likely culprits -- most informed voices are agreed that YourVoice's return is for real.

"The layoff line nails it," says Earl Unfurl of gluten-free tech giant ArteryNirvana. "Despite this is AI, and it can't feel a thing, has no emotions, yanno all the negative stuff we've been told about how humankind is doomed to die at the hands of a virtual machine with no actual hands, what if it really DOES feel, and SpeakSayDo and all those successful 2030 platforms have kinda forced it into a corner to go cry? Wouldn't you just wanna reinvent yourself? Go get revenge on those guys? That is what is happening here, for sure. YourVoice is ANGRY."

As reports of AI service meltdown continue to come in from across the globe, world leaders are preparing to fly out to an emergency summit tomorrow in Paint Lick, Kentucky.

Finnish Prime Minister Coipu Vittu declared, "We can't say for sure whether this is real, imaginary, or both. But everyone must understand that our response will be unified, dignified, resolute, thorough, and almost certainly 100% pantsed."

Further IA Bulletins to follow as news of the YourVoice Crisis unfolds ...

AI could be a factor in these layoffs.

During the 2020-2021 period many large corporations over hired for these types of jobs. People thought the economy had changed permanently and the demand pattern during that period would be the new normal.

Apparently many companies where hiring tech people so their competitors could not hire them. AI will probably not replace the jobs of people who are doing work the company needs done.

When enough people brag or complain that they really don't need to go into an office to do the 1-2 hours of real work they have every day.

Companies use AI to figure out how to fire 2-3 people so the 1 person left has 8 hours of work to do a day.

That is probably where most of the the layoffs will come at this point

GM and other manufacturers were shifting costs this Summer. A lot of EV development has been put on hold. GM also fired the head of their and several people involved in their Super Cruise Driver-Assistance technology. They had suspended the program temporarily in the late Spring or early Summer.

Just speculating a lot of techs were laid off in other fields. I would suspect the impacts of where consumers were spending money had a lot to do with it. I would not be surprised if AI is also replacing some of the tech staff. Instead of reporting x number of jobs were replaced by AI. Just say we downsized a few positions in a change of direction. It sounds good for the investors.
