Is This Really True?....

I see a lot of "gurus" claiming that they've made their millions by "list-building".

I'm new to online marketing and wanted to know if this is true so that I know where to start my investments early on. Thanks.

  • You can make a lot of money online without building a list.

In saying that, if you are looking to make money online, long term, I would strongly suggest how to develop a list in what you are doing.

If you have a strong list that you can monetize, than you will never have trouble making money.

Without a list, you will only have cold leads. If you have a list, those are considered warm leads and you will make more money with warm leads.

It's easy to claim anything online. I've come across "gurus" online that has many claims about making it big when it comes to online strategies. There are a few legit ones and there are those with just recycled content or something that is already common knowledge. If you are planning to invest in online marketing, you could check out Niel Patel and Minority Mindset's Youtube channel. Invest into learning first.

Sure you can make lots of money by building a mailing list of targeted leads.

Then sell them your products or affiliate products to them.

  • With a responsive buyers list, you will be able to create a job replacing, monthly passive income steam.

Building your email list will be one of your most important endeavors on your internet marketing journey, but not all Internet millionaires made their first million dollars online with just list building alone. There are other aspects to Internet marketing, and email marketing is just one of them.

Make sure you know which niche you want to market products in, before you start building your email list

Once you start your internet marketing business, you usually end up starting with affiliate marketing first.

The way to dominate product vendors' leaderboards, will be to have your own responsive buyers list to market to. You will only usually find out the real money online, is in your own email list.

You will then want to delve into product creation, where you create your own information products online, to promote, and attract your own affiliates.

You will focus on email marketing to build your affiliate list and your buyers list. You then want to start building your affiliate marketers list separate to your prospect list, so you can email your affiliate list, and respectfully ask them to market future products that you launch. This is the product launch method, to make money online.

You will grow your email list leaps and bounds, when you have affiliates promoting your products online, driving targeted traffic from their email list, to your lead capture pages.

Eventually you will have multiple lists segmented with prospects, buyers, affiliates and joint venture partners, in multiple niches.

Once you learn how to market products online effectively, you will be able to sell anything online for yourself, and other product vendors in your niche.

Hmmm, you probably won't like my reply then?

I did the list thing, and sure Frank Kern built an 8k list, (just before spam was made illegal) and made millions from it.

But l couldn't get it to work.

I created intro videos, and so forth, and did get quite a few signups, but it is very hard to make money from it.

I also showered them with tons of freebies and few products, but it didn't make much of a difference.

In the end l realized that the only time they really buy is when they sign up, so l had a fairylong sales funnel.

Then you have the up scale recurring costs of Aweber, that clobbers your unresponsive list, that just want freebies.

Maybe you can get it to work, Frank Kern certainly did, but he also did his own videos, and his own high priced products.

Listbuilding gives you the ability to capture the lead.

You probably paid for the lead, in either your money or your time, so it'd be valuable to keep it, don't you think?

An autoresponder (the software that keeps the leads organized and send them emails) lets you continue to market to the people who have stuck up their hands and said, "Yes, I'm interested!"

Many times they're not in the position yet to buy. Or their attention was caught by your offer, but the first time they looked at it their desire to buy wasn't high enough. Or this offer wasn't right for them, but a related one you show them later is.

If you are in the affiliate marketing business, you definitely should have a list.

For other types of businesses, it depends on you and your target market. I have seen a well-known business coach recently say that less than half of his buyers are coming from his list. And from my own experience, people decide to work with me within 48 hours...they don't sit on a list for six months and then suddenly realize they need to work with me. A lead capture form on my consulting services site from say 2012-15 just got freebie-seekers. So I took it down and deleted the list. The high ticket clients I serve have a real relationship with me, I talk with them live quite a bit from the first time we meet through working together, so having them on an autoresponder list with canned messages wouldn't help.

But that's my business. Yours is probably quite different. And you have to find out on your own. An autoresponder like ActiveCampaign gives you powerful features, and at the entry level is something like only $10/month. If you can't afford that, you probably shouldn't be trying to run a business.

AWESOME Jason & thank you for sharing your own personal experiences with me. This is the kind of value I was looking for in this thread!

So what I get out of your experience is that list-building can be quite profitable for most niches, but there comes times with certain niches that require more in-person and direct contact than having them on an autoresponder. Thanks again!

Recognising that prospects and customers have preferred methods of communication is important when it comes to what type of list you build and the messages you send via those groups.

You shouldn't restrict yourself by thinking you must capture the prospects email.

There are plenty of ways to influence groups of people and email is only one of them.

Think about all the ways you can communicate with your ideal clients and build those assets. That might include subscribers to your social channels, followers, custom audiences you create through retargeting, facebook messenger lists, lookalike audiences, various in-market type targeting and so on.

With more and more emails either not being opened or landing in the spam folders you need to look at a multi-channel approach to "list building".

It is not so much about having just an email list but more about having a broad approach to marketing to groups of people who you can target via the medium they prefer to communicate with.

    Best regards,

    Ozi

There are "gurus" that sell leads within their list too. one way the other half a dozen the other.

Some say money is in the list but I am going to take it one further. There is no money in any lists without any sales bring made. You could have the biggest list going but very little engagement between you and your list. And this is because there are small components that you need to implement in order to convert those subsctibers into. Buyers.Do yes list building is important but I don't feel that it is as important as the educational, entertainment, infotainment aspect of marketing. So therefore you should know that there has to be a balance so that you can tap into the emotions of that list to get them actively involved.

This is some what true but you can also make some income online without a list but a list is recommended to maximize your success.Even individuals that are not "Gurus" are making a decent income online from their mailing list. The list does not have to be large but should be targeted to survive.

As you probably read in this thread, customers do not usually buy from you on their first visit to your offer. That is true. That is why capturing their information into your mailing list will give you another opportunity to advertise to them again.

The benefit of building a list is that you can send new campaigns / follow up messages to all users for as long as they remain on the list at very little cost.

I've been building lists for over 17 years and there is nothing that I have found that beats the ROI. However, it isn't always as easy as it sounds. There are many marketers that have built a list and struggle to make money. Make sure you do your homework and that you can actually monetize the list (niche).

Stepping back and asking yourself WHO you want to talk to and WHY you want to talk to them is essential before you start building a list.

What if you build a list full of people you hate? You won't want to answer their questions, so you won't build any trust with them, and they'll buy less from you.

Better than building a list is building an audience. One that you have stuff in common with and want to help.

Then it becomes much more fun for them, and for you.

Building a list is actually one of the main strategies marketers do. So yeah, it's a good place to start. But I suggest to start reading about services like ManyChat who offer messenger marketing, which tends to be more effective than email marketing with higher open rates.

The truth is your list is warm (with a little hot thrown in) traffic that you can direct anywhere you want.

You'll hear the secret to list building is in the relationship with your list.

But, that's only partially true. The real secret is in the value you provide to the people on your list.

Your list is the only real asset you'll ever have online.

Some would say your site is an asset. Not really. If Google drops it you have no traffic. If you stop paying for ads you have no traffic.

But, send a 100% relevant email that solves your lists problems and you can have income in under a minute.

There are many skills you will have to learn online. But, because, at the end of the day your customers and subscribers are PEOPLE. Knowing them, their needs, their fears and desires is likley still the biggest skill of all.

Building a list (more accurately, multiple lists) is NOT the key to the vault.

It's a means to an end.

The real key is selling things to the people on your list, some of them several times

The way to do that is to focus on understanding why people get on your list. Sometimes, it's curiosity. Mostly, though, it's because they are seeking some kind of transformation in their life. It could be something serious, like managing a chronic health problem. It could be something as seemingly trivial as impressing the crowd waiting at the first tee or having a practically licked-clean dish at the church potluck. I say "seemingly" because, although that end may seem trivial to some, it is definitely not to your list members.

When your list members start to believe that they have finally found someone who gets them, and can actually deliver the transformation they seek, making sales is easy as long as you take care of your people. That means not offering them crap because it might make you a buck, or it has a tantalizing EPC or conversion rate.

A lot of people hear the advice "build a relationship with your list" and "talk to them like a friend across the table" and they misinterpret what that means. I have a very profitable (for them, anyway) relationship with Amazon. They email me every day, sometimes more than once. But Amazon is not my friend. Our relationship is built on their ability to offer me things I'm interested in at prices I'm willing to pay. The emails are not stiff or formal, but there is no confusing their intent. They want me to buy something.

If you want to go the Amazon route and just sell stuff, you need to earn a position in the inbox where the subscriber sees you as a valuable source of trustworthy recommendations. The main way to do that is to not recommend crap.

If you want to go a more up close and personal style, you still need to earn your spot in the inbox. But you do it by helping your people get small wins, small tastes of the transformation they seek. Then offer them a bigger chunk of success, with a price tag attached.

    Here's a cliche that's true...

You want them to be so impressed with your free stuff that they can only imagine how good the paid stuff is. You just need to be upfront and honest when giving the free stuff away -- let them know from the very beginning that you will have stuff you will ask them to buy.

    Last but not least...

Your goal is not to sign up as many people as possible. Signing up the wrong people just messes up your response rates and bloats your autoresponder bills.

Your goal is to sign up as many of the right people as possible, and discourage the wrong people from signing up in the first place.

Yes it it true. The money is in the list. But it is not as easy as it sounds.

You have to create extreme value in the entire process of generating a loyal buyers list, and that my friend is a process you have to learn before you will succeed in any online business in any niche market.

Whether you offer a product or service, digital or physical product, it is a necessary and basic part of the process that you must incorporate into your online business in order to succeed. I stress VALUE, VALUE, VALUE in everything you offer to your visitors. Whether that value is free information, a $9.97 product, all the way up to products costing $25,000 or more.

When value is presented in everything you do in your business, then loyal customers will be the only participants in your list and you will earn financial reward for the long term.

    I hope this helps.
