Noob Generic Seller Ready to Begin Building a Brand

I noticed a beginners area on this site and want to post my goals here as well as ask for any advice that may help in my situation.

I sell a lot of Legos on eBay. I am the biggest seller of Lego sets as far as I know. I recently found that I am able to get some of my eBay customers to my YouTube page. Currently I am able to pull about 150 views per day to YouTube but this is reliably increasing by about 3 views per day as I steadily grow the size of my store, so a few months from now this will be 500 views per day and by the end of next year it may very well be 1,000 or 1,500 or 5,000 views per day.

Currently all that we do is "process" Lego sets and post them online, but we want to start doing some more brandable and creative activities. This would look something like having a subscription box where we would design a unique set out of Legos every month and then ship that set with our instructions to all of our customers. This would also look like custom prints and patterns on Lego parts, unique accessories, etc. I would like to have this all be done by creating a brand similar to booster bricks which hosts regular livestreams on facebook and does custom builds, behind the scenes videos, etc.

In general, I think the brand should be like a party that everyone wants to be a part of because it is fun, creative, exciting, exclusive, and so on. The issue is that we are starting with nothing but Legos and a regular audience which is targeted but not necessarily interested yet, so we will need to hook them into our "party" and get them to check out some additional videos on our channel. We will need some good content, hopefully some regularly recurring series as well as some random videos that we can make in hopes of going viral. However, what I am most concerned with right now is the initial hook. If we are able to capture our potential customer's attention for say 15 seconds what are the most important things to do in order to get them engaged quickly?

I think you are over thinkiong this... "HOOKS" are for TV and that is a dated mind set.. if someone like Gary Vee can put up a 7.5 hour video https://www.youtube.com/embed/teK-h0IsHcI and get 128K views.. ill stop there.. think about THAT vs your mind set.

You need to think in the realm of 5 10 minute "hooks" and forget the term hook.. think CONTENT.. record a build.. have a link to the build directly in the description, and have a link to your site in the video.

Start paying attention to the ADS in your space.. they are not so much ads as they are BRANDING. have you seen the Chiron / Boost mashup? https://www.youtube.com/embed/ekWWeLkPsnE there is no party here.. This is premier LEGO branding at its finest.. and thats what you should try to emulate.

The key for you here.. is to build out a backdrop, and start building on camera.. your first videos are gonna suck, and as you do more they will evolve into a style that will BE YOUR BRAND - that's just how it works.

The key take away.. just start recording and go from there.. you seem to have all the structure and plans in place.. all you need now is action.

Think about this - for every lego kit you have online.. have a 5 minute build video, and have it on your listing... how many sellers in your marketspace do that? If I am going to come back 3 months later and buy another set.. whos listing am I going to look for?

in short.. forget the "Party" and the this and the that. you need to create CONTENT that opens a new avenue of traffic.. IE youtube.. and then shrinking that, for consumption on Insta and facebook, and spredding your efforts accross 4 5 10 different platforms to maximize exposure

    Hope that Helps!

I definitely like the concept of build videos for each listing as well as that video style and your use of embed links https://www.youtube.com/embed/ekWWeLkPsnE

The reason why I am talking about a 15 second hook window is my views are coming in on an explainer video so I figured I had some time for a type of AD for something related but not what they came for. I think a 5-15 minute video per week or twice per week is what I was shooting for directing them to. I will have to experiment with what eBay will allow in the way of less related videos but having a build video is definitely a good option.

I will get started with videos for a few small builds (which will suck) and hopefully get better but because there are 14,000 different Lego sets its ironically less daunting to get started because it shows how little a few bad first videos matter.

All awesome advice, thanks so much!

Yet, he posted a link to your video in this thread. As I said: "Violates forum rules." Read the rules!

Actually... correct me if I am wrong but a video link that displays the video box in the thread would be considered "embedded" and THAT was not done here.. and if you look around the WF you will see the practice of doing as such is pretty common.. so as much as it is a violation of forum rules... I think its one that is overlooked.

Brickloot, boosterbricks, etc., all offer subscription boxes, good idea.

To get started offer a contest, for your current subscribers, maybe a year of bxes as the grand prize, or weekly sets.

Make it a BEST LEGO idea contest, have your people CREATE your future UNIQUE products, and maybe as an incentive, name the new creation after the person who built it.

Jimmy Larson's farm of aliens, or Carol Beck's ranch of bridges.

Let their imaginations loose, cherry pick the best ideas, and feature them on the box of the month, or the weekly designed by members site.

When you involve your members in the creation of your products, you build in an interested TARGETED MARKET.

    Good luck.

Yes I was definitely thinking of having a contest where the winner's creation would be included in a future box and they would get a prize like a rare vintage set or minifigure. Great concepts!
