Re-Direct

Hi Guys

If I wanted to update my keywords phrase, or words particularly if such a phrase or word is in the current url is a 301 redirect the best way to go about effecting change? Is there another way? How many times can this be done over time or is it best to do something else?

    There is absolutely no reason to change your URLs just to get a keyword phrase in there. It is not going to help you rank better for those keywords and it is only going to further damage your rankings for a period of time - even if you 301 everything perfectly.

    Whomever is telling you to change your URLs to make them keyword rich is somebody you should definitely stop listening to.

    Finally, you definitely do not want multiple 301 re-directs for the same page. You would want to go back in and remove the previous 301s, re-directing all instances to the new page (i.e. NOT a chain of re-direct to url A - then re-direct A to B - then re-direct B to C).

      Thanks - But I read from many sources that your keyword/phrase is a very good SEO tactic if it's in your URL. Are you saying different? If search changes over time with your KW (A) but now search says its really KW (B) people are searching and (A) has little relevance what should one do? Still stick with A?

        Yep, and there are many "sources" (especially here on this forum), that still tell people to build web 2.0 sites, comment on blogs and forums and do social bookmarking to get links to boost their rankings. There is so much garbage being posted about SEO that hasn't been relevant for a decade but it doesn't keep people from perpetuating these myths.

        To the point, keywords in the URL in some cases can have an extremely minor effect on SEO, according to Google, but they say you should not obsess over it. You URL structure has a much bigger impact. Of course, if people blindly paste your URLs when they link to your page without using anchor text, keywords in the URL may give you a slight boost, but that is because of the anchor text in the bare link - not because Google is giving the URL a big boost because of the keywords in it.

        There are so many other things that actually WILL help you rank better, concentrating on minutia like this just doesn't make sense - especially changing a site's URLs in order to do it.

    This is not good practice, because each URL has own authority and excess use of 301 redirections is harmful. I suggest focussing on quality content and authentic off-page activities and also work on user behavior on a particular page. If you page rank but the bounce rate is high, limited engagement then the page will not rank for a long time.
