I work for a very small mom and pop hardware store as a website guy.*

My boss wants me to promote a product online which is selling well in the store.
I asked my boss what my internet budget is to promote this product. My boss answered,* *"ZERO."

My boss wants* me to go promote this product online using Facebook and other social media while I am at work. I would not be earning any commission on this.*

I asked my boss if I can resell this same product in my own time. He is okay with the idea of me selling this product on my own.

My question is this:
I am wondering if it is a good idea to create my own website and sell the same product that my boss is selling online on his website.

What would your feedback on this be?

    Sure sounds like a conflict of interest to me. Seems like your boss is asking you to get more sales online for his website. Your solution is to sell more of his stuff on your own website (ignoring his, I imagine, wherein the conflict lies).

    certainly not worth investing time and money on a new website. I guess the only viable option is Facebook, Twitter and dont forget Instagram - and persistence will be the key success factor

    Do some research first to see how competitive the niche is. Could you imagine doing some marketing of something like water coolers with a marketing budget of zero?


    Actually I had a similar job once. I was expected to build a site to compete with a company that has 6000 employees. Aside from my salary I had a budget of precisely zero.

    Do you currently have a following on Facebook? If not then it's going to be tough, you'll likely need to
    Build the following first.

    I really don't know what to say about you selling the product on your own time. How much would you make? How profitable is it?

    What I decided to do was just add my stuff to his website so I will be just promoting his and the "sister" website the sister website are closeout, customer damaged and things like that.

    You're an employee for a store with a website... and are being paid to try selling more of their products.

    That sounds like a good deal. Because you can learn how well it works, figure out the most cost effective way to promote it online. And if you find that it really does well, then you could either:

    a. point to your results, and ask your boss to be compensated for it (like an affiliate might be), or

    b. quit the job and set up in business on your own, selling this on your own website using the knowledge and experience you gained on the job
