To get started on the big freelance sites, be willing to work at a big discount initially, to build up lots of good reviews and ratings, then you can increase your price up to the usual for your work.

Be active on the freelance sites . . . scan the "wanted" section and reply quickly to anything you can do well.

Think of ways to promote your freelance work elsewhere, such as on social-media groups etc.

WHO are you best able to help?

WHY are you best able to help them, specifically?

WHAT do you do for them?

Most people start at the third question, and that is wrong.

If you want to build a real business, I recommend this free Steve Blank mini course.

But most people won't do the work.

There are no magic bullets. Freelance sites actually damage your positioning (if you had any to begin with) by dumping you into the deep end of a pool thick with competitors. The buyer has no idea why they'd pick you over anyone else, so the conversation devolves to the lowest price.

Start with why -- how great leaders inspire...

(Again, most people are too lazy to watch a 20 minute video... "Just give me the secrets!" they whine.)

If you are new to freelancing, you can enroll to courses were you can improve the skills you have and acquire other skills that are essential to being a great freelancer. First step to being a freelancer is being able to establish a name on the freelancing business, you must know your branding. Know what things are you good at, and know what you can offer your customers best. Don't go promising clients things that you cannot do.

Find a good niche and stick to it until you feel it's not doing as well as you'd hope and then change from there.
