Will a "Quotes" page hurt SEO?

I work for an online publication for sports coaches and leaders and we want to create an inspirational "Quotes" page on our site that the leaders can access (coaches love quotes).

Will having a "quotes" page risk being dubbed by Google as "duplicate content" and thus will it hurt our SEO? How can this be avoided? Any other tips for good practice in this arena?

Thank you!

Once again, there is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty. At worst, content won't get ranked on a single page because it is identical to another page (or pages) out there that already ranks well.

Even if you had the exact same content, one page on your site is not going to affect your site as a whole. If it did, practically every eCommerce site would be "penalized" because their contact us page, privacy, terms of service or shipping policy pages are nearly identical.

In your case, I would assume that there are no other pages that have the exact same quotes organized in the same way; therefore, it is not duplicate content.

All you need to do is do a search for a quote from something recent in politics and you will see dozens of pages ranking for it because they all present that quote in a unique way.

Do you think having the same or similar content as another page affects your business though?

You can answer that yourself. Have you decided not to buy something from Amazon because the content looked very similar to what was on Walmart.com?

In other words, no I do not. I run almost nothing but eCommerce websites and can assure you that as much as we all like to think our pages are better than the other guys', the majority of content on sites selling any given product is the same as other sites selling that same product.
