Monetizing Teaching - Computer Programming

Hi, I haven't done affiliate marketing in a long time. I used to use CJ and still have money in a ShareASale account because I didn't make the threshold. I was curious how people monetize teaching. From all I have seen, nobody make a whole lot with just the videos on YouTube itself. They have affiliate links, merchandise, and Patreon. I have also seen where people were using udemy for a while.

Is there a path to being able to monetize a passive income teaching programming? I have an idea and all, but if I'm not going to get paid, well, that's a lot of work to do without some kind of payoff (money). Not sure I want to work for a school.

People are a dime a dozen, so every market is supposedly saturated, so I know it's not something new per se, but that's kind of all the economy, do it better, get a following, etc.

Thanks for help.

This idea is probably not for you, then. There are no guarantees. Why not get a job teaching the subject, and see how the employer does the marketing and sales?

Every business needs Traffic and Conversion. People need to come from somewhere and see your stuff. Then some need to convert into buyers. You need systems to do these things. Doesn't sound like you want to go through the effort of setting those things up.

How did you get that? If there is no market why not persue a different market?

Edit: Public schools don't market. That's the school I meant

How people make money with YouTube other than ad monetization is having an outer circle and inner circle.

The outer circle is the public content. These are the intro videos on YT. They educate about the general topic, and share the personality and vibe of the host or channel with the audience.

The reason this part is done is that YT is a central platform people go to. The public understands they can search for help on that platform.

The inner circle is for people who want more.

They've seen the YT content. They like the host or vibe. They want more.

Some people will want to consume every last bit of content you create, and more besides.

Some people will want all the detail you can give them about the subject.

At the end of the YT videos of the outer circle, you have a Call To Action.

That CTA is to do something: sign up for a lead magnet, open a free account on your website, maybe even a low ticket sale. It could be anything, really, but it takes the prospective buyer OFF the public platform and ON to your platform.

"My Patreon subscribers get access to..." -- when you hear a channel host saying something like this, they are talking about the inner circle content.

Build the audience with the outer circle content. Offer the inner circle content to those eager for more. Not everyone will want that... some will be satisfied with the basics. But some will follow your CTA and move to your platform.

This is introductory stuff. I have introduced you to a few new terms. You do not need a ton of content, but you do need a core of it, and on topics about things people search for again and again and again. I have a video I made in 2011 that still gets views: it is outer circle content. But it teaches the basics, and some people like it. Then some viewers go buy a Kindle book or watch more videos or come to me for courses or 1:1 coaching. That's inner circle stuff. It has been going on for nine years.

At some point you have to gulp, take the jump and do non-scalable founder activities. Make your best assessment about what people want, and produce some content around it. Make your initial outer circle. Have a CTA for your inner circle--you don't even need anything in there yet, or maybe just one thing (a lead magnet like a list of 10 things people need to know about X, or a short list of places they can buy Y, or the 7 best items people can have in their toolbox for Topic J... or one advanced in-depth video, for starters. You do not need to have everything built out to move ahead.

In fact, it can be better not to. In 2013 I put out a sales training course here on weekly subscription. I had repurposed some existing but unviewed content for Week 1. I had plans for the following 3 weeks, but did not create anything until after people had bought Week 1 and proven demand. Then I created a Facebook group and let buyers tell me in there what they were struggling with. I could then make Week 2's content, drawing from what I knew plus their feedback, to not only teach them new stuff but handle the hurdles they were coming up with by implementing Week 1's content. It made for a better course. Just a few weeks later the course was done, I had been paid to make it, and the content matched the ongoing needs of the students.

I give this as an example so you can have a sense of what is possible.

It is important to go into product creation with a plan, and not be in isolation from your target market. Otherwise, you risk creating something nobody wants.

Does this address your questions better?

Yes. Thank you. I was planning on the YT free part to get subs and conversions. I did not know the outer, inner, and CTA terms though. I appreciate it.
