How to use web dev programming for internet marketing

I am learning web development. I finished a PHP class and am now taking a javascript class.

I would like to combine the 2 skills, web programming and internet marketing.

I don't know a lot about internet marketing. From some videos I watched about the topic in general, content marketing may be a good start. I had an idea to make some financial calculators. I know such things already exist. So I would start my making some basic calculators, like calculating a car payment based on user inputs. Then get to more unusual calculators, like for buying a duplex, living in one unit and renting the other.

Anyway, that part I could figure out. Then I'd need to do seo. But what about monetizing? I see that other content only sites have ads. Is this really a viable business? I can see how it would be pretty passive income once built, aside from maintaining seo.

  • Hi there,

It is a good skillset to have and can definitely help in the long run. The unusual calculator that you've mentioned here (MF and HouseHacking related) is quite popular actually - there is a whole community called Bigger Pockets that is (sort of!) built around this. So there IS a product-market fit and demand. Other than ads (make sure to not clutter your site with ads and lose traffic), you could go freemium? Offer something basic for free and monetize for advanced tool features?

You can monetize with google adsense, clickbank products, MaxBounty, or any such affiliate management sites. Or you become an affiliate for someone you find directly.

Google 'best affiliate programs' and you'll have tons of options. (tonnes of options, if you're not from around here PS I am being highly amusing. If you don't think so, you're wrong.

I am dead serious about affiliate programs, though).
