GDPR - Taking existing information from other public websites

Hi Warriors,

Do any of you know if its against GDPR to take a company's information from another existing website to use in your own website?

Let me give an example: Company A advertises its services on website X and its particulars are there on the web for all to see. Website Y wants to create a similar but more competitive platform and Y takes the existing companies and their particulars from website X and puts them on their site.

In effect there is no real theft of info since its already public and available, plus website Y is offering these companies additional advertising for free, at least for the first year.

    Company A hires a copywriter to learn about and write compelling text about the company's services...or pays an inhouse team to write content for the site where it sells its services. That 'intellectual property' is then uploaded to the company website.

    Website Y wants to create a similar but more competitive platform
    ...so they take the copyrighted info from Company A's site and claim it as their own? What do YOU think? Is that right? Of course not.

    There is theft of intellectual property - and it doesn't matter what Website Y plans to do with it. Trying to justify it doesn't make it acceptable. It is important to understand the basics of copyright and trademark law to keep yourself (and your business) safe.

      I'm not planning on stealing registered info from one site to populate my site with same. All I want is to put the name of the company, address and possibly phone number, nothing more. There is no theft of sensitive data or the like.

      When this is done, I will send generic email to all concerned companies to notify them that their name is on this site, which will help them to promote their company. They will then be give two options: (1) Complete their profile with additional particulars i.e. its their call or (2) Not to appear listed, in which case they can simply delete their profile.

      That is in essence what I am trying to do.

        Yelp and Manta.com and such sites are doing what you're doing. On those sites, I can claim my profile. If I do, they try to get me to buy something... more exposure, ads, etc.

    You cannot copy content just because it's there for all to see.
    Stop being lazy and develop your own original content.

        I would recommend asking for these companies approval
        before adding them to your site instead of giving them the
        option of deleting their profile.
