Penguin 4 Penalties Being Released

Google just announced a big Penguin update (first one in two years) and that these penalties from spammy backlinks will now happen in real time.

What is Penguin?
Penguin is the name of Google's penalty for spammy backlinks.
If you have spammed, irrelevant links to your site then your pages can be penalized.
Why Should I Care? I Don't Spam Backlinks
Spammed backlinks are often created by blackhatters scraping content from web pages and putting it on their own.
They then intersperse links to their sites.
You may be on the receiving end of these spam pages if you had links on the pages the black hatter did not remove, or if the black hatter added links to your site to help hide their own links.
Or, you may be the victim of a negative SEO campaign by a competitor to nuke your site.
Bottom line: you should care a lot about Penguin even if you are not creating spammed backlinks.
Additionally, it seems that many who say they have nothing to worry about and don't spam - when their links are actually reviewed - are far too optimistic about what they are doing. They are spamming with poor links and don't realize it.
What if I Have Bad Backlinks?
Then your web pages may be penalized. That means lower rankings, less traffic, and less money for you.
What is the New Update?
Three things.
First, it is a new algorithm update. Sites and links not previously penalized may now fall into Penguin.
Second, it is the first Penguin update in two years. That's a big deal and a long time to wait.
Third, Penguin will no longer update on specific dates, but is being included in Google's core algorithm to immediately impact rankings on a daily basis.
