Sometimes we learn something new and do not even realise it. It might be something small that could affect our future dramatically and we didn't notice. Or it may be something high that we cannot help but see it.

This blog is basically a journal of lessons I have learnt.

The tools I need for my online business

Did you mention a shopping cart for your products/sales?
I would suggest Premium Web Cart. It is easy and has great flexibility.

I have used Joomla and did not know any HTML and was able to use it with very little assistance.

    Bum Marketers Bum Me Out!

I know what you mean. I've seen the same thing on a site I have. No wonder EzineArticles is so strict.

    Joomla! 1.5.7 has been released

One of the bits of security code in 1.5.7 only works in php 5. In php 4 it causes problems.

Get the workaround here >> Joomla! 1.5.7 upgrade

My brother says I'm the cleverest person he knows ...

Dan, one on one it normally is fine. And as you say people relate to mail order, especially Americans who've had mail arder for ages.

On the Internet the problem often comes on web sites where we done realise that we have to dumb it down a bit for the average Joe to understand what we are trying to sell.

"A lesson learnt from selling insurance."

I can't begin to explain how much I learned from selling insurance. Selling intangibles is probably one of the most difficult (and thus most lucrative) areas of direct sales to be in. I'm glad for my time in that industry.

You're right that most people get lost very quickly if jargon is used. But I find that most people have an easy time understanding mail order. I just relate IM to that.

NB: Joomla! 1.5.6 Released - Security fix

    Well! None too soon.

Shortly after I posted the main post to the blog I found one of my sites had a hack attack and the "fun" and games started and lasted two days.

This morning the hacker and I were on the site at the same time - I change my password then "it" changed my password, so we ping ponged along until I got my host to do an Apache restart to dump "it" off.

I finally got the web site updated with the new release and installed some security measures.

Heck, I'm not a programmer or back-end boffin but I had to learn some stuff fast.

For more about web site security go read Joomla Administrators Security Checklist - Joomla! Documentation and Top 10 Stupidest Administrator Tricks - Joomla! Documentation

Using Free Templates For Joomla! or Wordpress

Yes, not all themes are created equal.

Some are too graphics intensive and other have a lot of garbage code in them, especially if they were created with some of the HTML editors and then converted.

I am not a php programmer but I think that templates should have the css and js code seperate from the tempate index page rather than embedded in the page.

    yes,
i recently played around with a few themes that were converted from wp to blogger xml, and BOY was there a bunch of funny code in there.......

i also found that the fancy themes take longer to load, and it matters to dialup users. On one of my blogs the average time spent on site improved by about 30 % after i switched back to a simpler theme. (wp)
