First, your web ads must have content that matters to the target. Nothing is more important than a message that is fundamentally a mirror in which the target will recognize himself. Once that is done you have activated their imagination.
Second, the presentation of the ad must be compelling, as well. Simplicity of presentation is critical, as well as visual difference.
My job is to create a design that is distinct from its surroundings, yet sticks in the targets mind. This is called top of mind awareness.
Third, Call to action. Once you have completed the first 2 principles you want your target to act. So, tell them. Why will they act because you have activated their imagination and the are now actually seeing themselves using your product.
