I’m sure you’ve seen it.

Google around and you’ll find the same thing over and over again:

“Make a site like eBay? You’re crazy, that would cost tens of thousands, if not millions of dollars.”

People will drop all manner of buzz words and tech terms, more excited to intimidate you with their knowledge of acronyms than to inspire you to make your site.

Well, luckily those people are just hating, and have no idea what they’re talking about. The truth is you can make an auction just site like eBay. Yes, YOU. And believe it or not, you don’t need a huge budget or programming skills.

You just need four things to make the site.

The Four Things You Need

With each of these four components, you can make your own website that allows people to register, bid on, and win auctions.

Lets’ get to the first component now.

A domain name

A domain name is like your virtually property. It’s where people will go to find your site. The tough part of buying a new domain is finding one that a squatter hasn’t already taken.

My advice is to come up with as many potential ideas as you can, and check out this guide for some tips on how to do that.

When someone visits your domain, you need a server to send your site's files to their browser. This is where hosting comes in.

You pay a host to give you space on one of their servers, and they deliver your websites files when visitors show up.

Without hosting, there is no website.

CMS stands for Content Management System. That’s awfully wordy, isn’t it? Let me break it down.

A CMS gives you an interface where you can write, edit, publish, and well, manage your content. WordPress is an example of a very popular CMS.

You can add posts, pages, and all kinds of content to your site with WordPress.

The Auction Functionality

With the above three tools, you can successfully setup a website on your own domain. If you were starting a simple blog, those tools would be enough.

To create an auction site, you can then use WordPress themes and plugins to add a great design and the functionality needed to run auctions on your site.

To find out the theme I recommend for making an auction site with WordPress, check my comprehensive guide to making a site like eBay. There I'll cover the theme that will make your site look and work like an auction site, and I'll talk about the total cost of making such a site as well.

You can make any kind of site you want with the tools above. WordPress is over a decade old now, and there are themes and plugins available for any kind of site imaginable. Learning how to use it takes some practice, but once you're comfortable with it, you can make any kind of site you want.
