A Little Competition Helps

I learned something about myself today.
I don't like competition, but I respond positively to it. I think I have single handedly ruined my success by avoiding competition or by going into areas where there is very little. That does not bring out my best.
I found this out on the basketball court. It is difficult to marshall physical resources to do something as simple as walk on the treadmill; but when challenged on the BB court, I gave a little more effort than I had due to competition.
I didn't really realize the connection until I picked up on something in my market. A potential danger and entry point. All of a sudden, my mind began to race to pick up on the little things that I needed to do in order to compete.
I don't think it is a scarcity mentality to operate at your peak performance level. In that sense, we all need to run against someone who is running faster. We need to compete in areas where we are outmatched so that we can stop wondering about just how smart 'they' are versus we.
I got an e-mail form Jeff Walker today about Eben Pagan's new course. I thought to myself, I could have put together that course, but no one would ever listen. I stopped myself and asked why. Why not put a course out there? Why not compete on the basis of what I know. Will there be competition..of course. But knowing that seems to bring the best out in me.
Not because I have this supposed scarcity mentality or that I scared I will lose something. I don't think that God wants us to fear anyone or anything by Him. But because there is something about running in the same area next to someone that is doing better. You only know you can do better, when you do better.
I wonder if we would not be having this auto crisis if it was the Big 20 and not the Big 3.
Good competition wakes you up early and keeps you up late because you know that you have got to give that something extra. That little bit more.
