Well, the guy who created that iPhone app was making $10,000 per DAY from people buying the iFart app. In fact, on Christmas Day 2008, he made over $40,000 in ONE day! I know some people who don’t make that in a whole year.
It just goes to show you that, even though the economy is tight right now, people will still pay a small fee to be entertained.

Does the iPhone development kit and simulator run on platforms other than the Mac?

The book teaches you how to develop your own apps on the Mac, or if you don't have a Mac, it tells you how to outsource the making of your app.
