Website Backlinks Can Draw Traffic, Too

Getting traffic from website backlinks is nothing new, but the popularity of doing this on purpose has been revived, thanks to the recent rash and wrath of search engine updates.

For a number of years, Internet Marketers had great success in using a variety of search engine optimization (SEO) methods to get organic search engine traffic. When these methods were applied effectively, search engine traffic most often far exceeded direct backlink traffic.

For most marketers, that joyful circumstance came to an unfortunate end earlier this year when many websites suffered the loss of most of their usual search engine traffic. It is proving to be quite an uphill struggle for a lot of marketers to regain the favour of the search engines.

Fortunately, the best practices of developing website backlinks can assist in the rebuilding process.

Here are a few common backlinking tactics you can work on using. More details can be found in my APC blog post, Get Traffic To Your Site With Backlinks.

Targeted Traffic: You want targeted traffic and the first step in getting it is knowing what it looks like. It is important to determine exactly who your prime prospects are. Who is your most likely customer? Once you know who they are, then look for websites where they may go and work on getting backlinks from those sites.

Dofollow and Nofollow Links: Whether a link is dofollow or nofollow is no longer an issue. The important thing is how relevant a site is to yours. Find sites that are a close match to your own marketing theme or niche and if they offer good, strong, quality content to their visitors, then you want backlinks from those sites. They will send you targeted traffic.

Anchor Text: When building backlinks and using anchor text in them, it is wise to vary the text from site to site. Don’t use the same keywords as your anchor text on site after site. Try to use variations of the keyword or keyword phrase. This will eventually help you in the search engines, but more importantly, if you use anchor text that is more suitable to the site where the link is, it will have more meaning and more attraction to the readers.

Be Attractive: The more backlinks you can get from sites like yours, the better, and the way to get other site owners to willingly post your links on their sites is to build quality into your site making it attractive to your readers and to other website owners.

Post new, unique content to your site as often as you can, and make sure the quality of it is high. Offer useful information, relevant tips, ideas and solutions, and place your best quality content “above the fold” on your website.

Website backlinks can certainly do their job to drive targeted traffic to your site. When you engage in a regular program of backlink building, you improve your chances to replace the volumes of traffic you may have lost as a result of search engine algorithm updates. Success in marketing means taking action to overcome the challenges and obstacles.

Thats right. I found my traffic to my websites is mostly through search engines and never really through the backlink itself. But I would of never been found on google without having the backlinks in place. strange that

Yes, as Internet Marketers, we should never rely on just one traffic technique. We need alternatives in place in case one fails (as has happened with the search engines for many marketers this year!) And besides, as you have pointed out, some of the traffic techniques work together and support each other - like backlinks supporting your search engine positioning.
