Hi All,

In my previous post I gave a basic outline of how I have sold online services to offline businesses via a local directory or local portal as some say.

One point I made in that post is the fact that you should walk into a business and say to the first worker you see, "Hi, My name is ____, are you the owner.?

Why do you want to say, "Are you the owner?" instead of "May I speak to the owner?"

This is very subtle, however one of two things will happen in every case. You will either be addressing the owner or you will not be addressing the owner.

If you are not talking to the owner the employee you are talking will be thinking, "He thinks I'm the owner."

This will make the person you are talking to feel good about themselves and they will be more likely to help you get in touch with the owner.

If you really are talking to the owner he/she might feel insulted if you don't recognize him or her as being the owner in the first place. "This guy isn't very smart, he doesn't even recognize that I'm the owner."

These examples help to emphasize that every thing you say and every movement you make in a person's place of business can and will have an impact on the final results. And of course the results you are looking for is that they like you and your service and become your next client. Part 1 of this post can read here.

Next time I'll be talking about the importance of business cards. Not yours, but theirs.
